    I am an Experimental Psychologist with a Ph. D. from McGill University in 1985. My research interests involve the perception of sounds, investigate speech-related illusions as well as musical illusions, and how language may influence music perception. I primarily teach Statistics and Research Methodology, Experimental and Advanced Experimental courses. I have been professor at MSUM since 1991, and have been serving as department Chair since 2008.

    I received my undergraduate degree in psychology at MSUM, returned for my master’s and specialist degrees in school psychology, and completed my doctorate at UND in teacher education. I spent 5 years as a school psychologist in Iowa, then returned to MSUM as a part-time instructor for psychology and education while working part-time in the Education department. I teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the Psychology and School Psychology programs. My interests are differentiated instruction, co-teaching, early literacy and language, strategic rhetoric, and study abroad experiences for educators.”

    Linda Houts-Smith, Associate Professor and Program Coordinator, TESL; Ph.D. in English, M.A.T. in ESL, B.A. in Classics and Medieval Studies; Linda began her career in ESL as a Peace Corps volunteer in Morocco, and she has taught in six different states as well as three foreign countries. Now Linda not only teaches in but also coordinates the TESL program. Although a generalist, Linda’s greatest expertise probably lies in syntax and the nature of oral language.

    Ph.D., LPC, NCC, NCSC; Lisa brings eight years of being a licensed school counselor in a variety of K-12 public educational settings to her role as the chair of School of Social Work and Counseling & Students Affairs Department and program coordinator and assistant professor, Counseling & Student Affairs Program at MSUM. Lisa was also trained in Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS) and Response to Intervention (RtI) and defined the role of the school counselor within each of these systems. Lisa is a Ph.D. graduate in human development emphasis in Counseling Education & Supervision from North Dakota State University, CACREP accredited program. She is a Licensed Professional Counseling in Minnesota, National Certified Counselor, National Certified School Counselor, member and faculty advisor of Chi Sigma Alpha, Academic & Leadership Honor Society, and Chi Sigma Iota, Academic & Professional Honor Society International.

    I have a Ph.D in Psychology from the University of California Berkeley and specialize in infant and child development, perception, and cognition.     Dr. Tom Strait is currently in his twelfth year on the faculty at MSUM. In addition to serving as Chair of the Music Department, he teaches trumpet, horn, and jazz studies. He holds a Doctor of Arts degree in trumpet performance from the University of Northern Colorado, as well as degrees from the University of Texas and Henderson State University. Before coming to MSUM, he taught for several years at both the university and public school levels and served in the U.S. Air Force, playing with the USAF Academy Falconaires. An active free lance trumpet player, he has performed with many artists, including Bob Hope, Robert Goulet, Nancy Wilson, and Doc Severinsen. His past teachers include William Pfund, Raymond Crisara, and Donald Kramer. Dr. Strait is a Yamaha performing artist.
