Virtual Advising
Welcome to the Virtual Advising page of MSUM's graduate studies webpage. This will give you an idea of what needs to be done to work with your advisor to plan your course of study for your graduate degree, certificate, or license.
- Upon admission, each student is assigned an advisor.
- If you do not remember who your advisor is that was assigned to you, you may call your particular program or call the Graduate Studies Offie at 218-477-2134.
- When you meet with your advisor during the FIRST SEMESTER of enrollment, you will write out your plan of study on Form 1. This will be your blueprint to finishing your degree, certificate or license.
- You will indicate on Form 1 what courses (both required or core and electives) you are planning on taking.
- Sometimes you cannot list all your electives. Some programs only allow 3 or 4 credits of electives, some do not allow any, and some allow as many as 10 credits of electives
- Understand that when you are ready to graduate, the Records office will look at your Form 7 and make sure that is matches what is listed on your transcript and that all degree requirements are met.
- As you meet with your advisor, you should discuss with him/her your interests and purposes of obtaining the particular degree, certificate, or license and if there is room for electives, the advisor can make some suggestions to you
- If you have any questions or hesitations about what to register for, always contact your advisor first before going to the program coordinator or the Dean's office. Your advisor usually will be able to answer your questions and steer you in the right direction.
