Paintings
"A painting that doesn't shock isn't worth painting."--Duchamp
Duchamp was conventionally trained in the visual arts.
|
Duchamp's earliest paintings were strongly influenced by French impressionism and fauvism. In 1911 he produced a number of early cubist paintings, such as Portrait of Chess Players at left. |

Duchamp's fame was ensured by Nude Descending a Staircase
No. 2 (1912)
Many of his cubist contemporaries hated this painting and condemned it. One critic dismissed it as "an explosion in a shingle factory." When it was shown in the United States, a writer for a Chicago newspaper advised viewers to sniff cocaine as an aid to understanding it.
At left: The Passage from Virgin to Bride, 1912 This image is a precursor, in both imagery and title, to the "large glass" (The Bride), begun in 1915.
