Philosophy 306: 18th Century Philosophy

Second Exam Spring 2009

Your TYPED exam is due at the beginning of class on April 16.

You will be graded on clarity and accuracy.

Answer any two questions. One will be worth 75% of your exam grade, and one will be worth 25%. The former should be approximately four typed pages. The latter should be approximately 300 words in length.

  • What does Hume mean by the claim that “conclusions from experience are not founded on reasoning”? Explain and evaluate.

  • What is Hume’s fork? What is his criterion of meaning? What role do these play in his subsequent philosophical arguments about induction and causality?

  • Explain and evaluate Hume’s position on free will and determinism.

  • Explain how instinct differs from custom and explain how the distinction is an important element of Hume’s account of belief and knowledge.
