Homework Assignment #2
Due Date: Wednesday, Sept. 1

Homework Assignment #3

Use one of the two examples of music that you wrote about in Homework #1.  Choose a specific recorded performance of it. What are some of the features of the PERFORMANCE that, if changed, would alter the emotional association you previously made?

Explain Kivy’s point about the Saint Bernard. Then, using a musical example of your own choosing, explain how Kivy's point applies to a specific piece of music.

Homework Assignment #5
Due: Wednesday, Sept. 22
Give a very short answer to these two questions:
a. Before you read chapter 8, choose a piece of literature that you know well. What is it, and what theme or themes do you find in it?
b. Based on your understanding of chapter 8, what is the intentionalist position?

Homework Assignment #10
Due Monday, November 8
Before you read chapter 3 of Attali, answer this question: What were the last five different musical works that you heard? (If you perform music, don't count any performances or practice sessions that you were involved with.) In addition to saying what musical works you heard, describe the circumstances that made the music available to you.

Homework Assignment #11
Due Monday, November 15
In preparation for Attali, Chapter Four, answer these questions about yourself:

  1. How much recorded music do you own?
  2. How much of this is bootleg music (music copied from a source that you do not own)?
  3. How often do you hear recorded music? (Estimate the number of hours per day.)
  4. How much of the total from question #3 do you control (YOU choose what you'll hear), and how much is selected by someone else?

Homework #12
Due Friday, December 3
