The undergraduate minor in TESL comprises 28 credits of courses in the areas of English language study, foreign language study, linguistics, and language pedagogy.
Students who select this minor may consider one of two different emphases. Students should discuss their intentions with the TESL program coordinator and their academic advisors in order to ensure a course of study that meshes with their majors.
In order for the minor to lead to a teaching license for American K-12 schools, it must be attached to an education major, such as English education, Spanish education, elementary education, etc., and 10 more credits are required. Application and acceptance to the teacher education program will occur through the established procedures in the major discipline.
The second emphasis does not lead to licensure in the K-12 schools but allows students who have an interest in TESL for such situations as missionary work or Peace Corps to begin training prior to their departure. Students who do not seek K-12 licensure in Minnesota or another state do not need to major in an education discipline but may select any major offered by MSUM.
