MSUM students are doing amazing things. Our students embrace diversity, challenges, opportunities, unique experiences and continue to produce incredible results. Our students participate in student organizations, attend and present at regional and national conferences, compete at regional and national competitions, collaborate on faculty-mentored projects, gain hands-on experience through internships, help coordinate community service projects, and more. Many have won prestigious scholarships for academic excellence and many have won awards for their stellar work inside and outside of the classroom. See what the students from the English Department are doing.
Adam Heidebrink, English (Literature Emphasis)
"The English program at MSUM has a really big core of classes that all English majors take together so it begins with a sense of unity. I started taking literature courses and I found that's where my passion lies. From there it was great, I took more classes and found that I just loved it. The literature classes I've taken have honed my essay writing abilities and my critical analysis of text. My ability to read and analyze texts has improved greatly."
Katie Hansen, English Education
"The English class environment is very conversational. In a class I’m in right now, the first thing we do is move the desks into a circle so we can see everyone, which I think is great. That way everyone has a chance to speak up, and you really get a chance to know everyone."
"I’m involved in Sigma Tau Delta, which is the English honors society. We do fundraising so we can go to conventions. We try to get involved in the community. We try to give back to the community while still pushing ourselves."
Sigma Tau Delta conducted the sixth largest campus book drive in the nation for all Diamond Tier participants at the end of last Spring.
Adam Heidebrink, Logan Herold and Michael Lobdell, all seniors, and junior Rachael Johnson presented papers at the 19th annual Northern Plains Conference on Early British Literature last Spring hosted at Saint Mary’sUniversity of Minnesota, Winona. The conference draws undergraduates, graduates students, and faculty from around the region and beyond.
