Advising Information for Teacher Education Majors and Advisors

Important Dates to Remember

Fall Free Drop/Add Period
- is only the first 4 days of the semester.

Fall Tuition Payment - Registration will be canceled for non-payment by August deadline. No bills are sent to students.  Make arrangements for payment of fall tuition and fees early.  MNSCU Board policy requires that students registered for fall classes must meet certain criteria or risk cancellation of their fall registration. Full details are available at the Business Office website, or contact the Business Office at (218) 477-2221.

For students majoring in Elementary Education, Early Childhood Education, or Special Education, here is some information that will help you navigate the second year of your academic career:

Summer School - Registration for ALL students opens on the same date.  No access code or registration window is needed for summer registration.  Register early; courses with low enrollment will be canceled in late April.

New Advisor - During your third semester at MSUM you will be reassigned to a different academic advisor.  We will email the new advisor's contact info to you at your mnstate.edu email address.  Each semester you will meet one-on-one with this advisor to plan your academic program and discuss issues and concerns about school.  To identify your new advisor, check the top section of your class schedule or the top of your DARS transcript report.  Teacher Education faculty advisor offices will be in Holmquist Hall as of July 27, 2009.

Courses - You will also continue taking courses for the Dragon Core requirements and education courses.  You should also begin/continue courses for your chosen Specialty Area (Elementary Ed majors only).  Check the bulletin for prerequisites for courses in the major and specialty areas.  EECE 291 must be take prior to EECE 341.  AMCS 233 may be taken once you have earned 32 credits.  Math 303 should be taken your junior year and before Math 304.  Note:  Early Childhood and Special Education majors do NOT need to complete a specialty area.  Some courses are offered only once per year.  Check the MSUM bulletin or contact academic departments for further information.  Plan accordingly.

Admission into Teacher Education - Once you have completed ED 205/205E, CMST 100 or AMCS 233, and ED 294, and are sure that you will continue as an education major, you need to be admitted to the Teacher Education program via SARTE (Selective Admission and Retention in Teacher Education).  Your DARS may say "OK" for the SARTE section, but this does NOT mean that you have been admitted to the program.  Rather, it indicates that you have met the academic requirements and may now make application.

SARTE admission must be completed before you can register for 300 and 400 level courses with the prefix EECE, ED, or SPED, or for ART 350.

For SARTE application materials and detailed instructions, please visit:  www.mnstate.edu/edhuman/sarte.cfm.

Transcript Information - You may access your own transcript (DARS) as follows:

- Log on to your registration screen.
- Go to "Grades & Transcript," and select "Interactive Degree Audit Report."
- Click on "Open All Sections" to see all course information.

This version will show how you are meeting the criteria for the Liberal Studies/Dragon Core, major, specialty area, related requirements, and SARTE requirements.  Always use the DARS for advising sessions and when applying for SARTE, PFY, student teaching, or graduation.

Coaching - Minnesota does not issue a coaching certificate.  The school district that hires you to coach must document that you meet the requirements.  At this time, the minimum requirements are:  Health 125 (First Aid/CPR), Health 250 (Injury Management) and a coaching course (either PE 460 Principles of Coaching, or a sport-specific coaching course, PE 371-379.)

Electives - You must have at least 128 credits to graduate.  You may need to take some electives beyond your dragon core, major, specialty area, or licensure area, and related requirments.  The number of electives you have will depend on your specific program choices.  Coaching, history, and additional SPED courses are all good options, but take courses that interest you, or use your elective credits to explore a new area!  Also see ND license information (below).

Spanish Specialty Area - the Praxis II test for this area is VERY difficult to pass, even for Spanish majors.  You need at least a minor (or the major) and a language immersion experience to get licensed in this area.
