2+2 Programs Leading to Bachelor of Science in Special Education at Anoka-Ramsey Community College, Cambridge, and Century College, White Bear Lake |

The 24 students in the Waubun cohort of the Curriculum & Instruction Masters Degree Program have finished their first full year of study. The program is customized to the needs of district students, and is aligned with the professional development goals of the district. Coursework has focused on topics of local interest, such as:
Teachers, school district officials, and community members provide input on course content. Teachers learn concepts and strategies which they apply in their schools and classrooms. Data on results of application are then collected and analyzed in the graduate courses. The logistics of the program support this ambitious agenda. Advising takes place on-site. The examination for admission to the program was administered after school in a high-school classroom. The program is highly affordable -- there is no extra charge for on-site delivery, and the sequence of classes maintains students' eligibility for federal student loans. The course schedule is designed to facilitate the back-and-forth process of application and analysis. Care is taken to avoid conflicts with school activities and teachers' personal commitments. If you think your school or district would benefit from a degree program customized to the needs of local students and teachers, please contact Boyd Bradbury or Britt Ferguson for more information. |
Presidents from Century College, Anoka-Ramsey Community College, and MSU Moorhead have entered into a special agreement that has established "2+2" programs at these two Twin Cities community college sites. In a 2+2 program, candidates complete a designated associate's degree at the community college, and then transfer into MSU Moorhead's bachelor's degree program, while remaining on the community college site! Students who complete an A.A. degree at Anoka-Ramsey Community College or an A.S. degree at Century College can transfer into MSU Moorhead's program in special education, resulting in a Bachelor of Science degree and eligibility for a Minnesota State teaching license in the area of Special Education: Emotional or Behavior Disorders. The program started in the Fall of 2007. Currently enrolled candidates will continue with classes through the summer. Classes are offered on the community college campuses on evenings and Saturdays to accommodate the needs of working adults. Some course offerings are online or via hybrid delivery. Furthermore, as a result of this special agreement, candidates may utilize the facilities at their community college campus. Individuals wishing to participate in this program can obtain information at each of the community college campuses, or by contacting Britt Tatman Ferguson, Twin Cities Coordinator for MSU Moorhead (contact information below). Individuals who have completed the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MnTC), or who have degrees from other institutions, may complete the bachelor's degree program as well. They need to meet with the Coordinator to have their previous coursework reviewed on an individual basis in order to determine which courses they still need in order to complete the B.S. degree. In a May 2007 interview with Greg Hunt for the Isanti County News, Dr. Britt Ferguson explained that a key motivator for extending the Special Education program to Cambridge was the overt need for instructors in that area. "Occupational studies show that there is a shortage of Special Ed professionals, both in Minnesota and nationally. We're facing a lot of retirements in the field," said Dr. Ferguson. "Collaborations take time, effort, and, above all, trust. This is an exciting venture." | The Moorhead, Minnsota, school district has initiated a new approach to teacher professional development: a master's degree program with a literacy emphasis, offered on-site at Ellen Hopkins Elementary School. The program began Spring 2007 with core courses in reading, to be followed by assessment and practicum courses scheduled to begin on June 5, 2007. Teachers enrolled in the program will complete requirements for the Minnesota reading license in May 2008, and will earn masters degrees in Curriculum and Instruction in December 2008. This degree program combines the benefits of intensive study of reading with the breadth of the Curriculum and Instruction masters program. On-site delivery allows for flexible scheduling, adjusted to meet the needs of local teachers, and relevance to teachers' classroom duties. Teachers in the program have commented that they frequently apply principles and techniques learned in graduate courses in their daily lesson planning. If you teach in the Fargo-Moorhead area and are interested in joining this cohort, please contact Britt Ferguson for details about summer courses. Similar programs can be provided for cohorts of 18 or more students in districts within a 200-mile radius of Fargo-Moorhead. Please contact Teri Walseth or Britt Ferguson if you think teachers in your district would be interested. |
