  • Opportunities for Graduates

The Economics Department takes great pride in its undergraduate preparation for professional careers, graduate study and law school. With 50 to 60 majors, and a graduating class of 10 students annually, about two-thirds of our students in recent years have attended graduate or law school. Graduates with a B.S. degree often are employed in banking, insurance or other financial sectors. Alumni are employed with city, state and federal government agencies and companies such as Fidelity Investments, Honeywell, The Hartford Company and Wells Fargo Bank, among others. Students pursuing graduate degrees also find positions with colleges and universities.

A fall panel of alumni and faculty participate in a workshop for students who are interested in graduate school in economics, applied economics, business, public administration or law school. The workshop provides information on applying and gaining entrance into graduate and professional programs and insights into the graduate experience.

MSUM Economics graduates are successful in entering major graduate programs in economics and law and nearly all of them are awarded at least partial funding for graduate study. Small classes, outstanding advising, and personal, one-on-one attention allow faculty to focus students’ graduate and professional interest beyond undergraduate work. Faculty assist students in designing undergraduate programs that prepare them for the rigors of graduate school, which often includes substantial course work in mathematics, statistics and economics. Students may gain experience in faculty-mentored research projects, where they employ large data sets and present their findings at professional meetings and student academic conferences.
