Thousands of small steps by the friends of Dragon Athletics will add up to one giant step for the program! The Dragon Fire Walk is not a test of endurance—it’s an enjoyable way to demonstrate support for student athletes and raise money for scholarships. Imagine a half-hour walk in the springtime air. Imagine all the good you can do for the community’s only remaining Division II athletic program.

We live in a competitive world. Dragon athletes deserve a level playing field. That’s why we’ll walk on Saturday, April 21.

Last year’s inaugural Dragon Fire Walk for Athletics enjoyed immense success, with more than 350 walkers and 700 donors and businesses who raised just over $100,000 for MSUM student athletes. Our goal is to raise the bar this year with more walkers, more donors and more contributions. The campus and community are abuzz with excitement for our student athletes. And there’s reason to be excited.

  • After engineering one of the greatest turnarounds in Dragon history, Damon Tomeo was officially named the Dragons’ head football coach in December. Tomeo prodded his young Dragons to a 6-5 overall record last fall as interim coach, the first winning season at MSUM since 1999. MSUM closed with a rush, winning the final three games to hike its Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference record to 4-4 and raise the bar substantially for 2007. Serious Dragon football fans can hardly wait.
  • The women’s basketball team is off to a great start this year with two wins over NCAA Division I teams. First, the Dragon women shocked the NDSU Bison in an exhibition opener 63-52. They continued to flex their muscles with another sparkling 68-64 victory over the University of Northern Iowa, marking the second straight triumph over a NCAA Division I school.
  • The MSUM Dragons landed 28 student-athletes to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference All-Academic Team for the 2006 fall athletic season. To be eligible for this honor, student-athletes must be a member of the varsity traveling team and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better. (Football-9; Men’s Cross-country-4; Women’s cross-country-3; Women’s soccer-7; Volleyball-5)
  • The 2005-2006 women’s track and cross-country teams were conference champions. The 2006-2007 men’s cross country team won the NSIC team championship.

There’s a lot to be excited about at MSU Moorhead. We hope you’ll join us as we strive to increase scholarship opportunities for our
student-athletes.
