MSUM Dragon Walk

WHAT A CELEBRATION!

Dubbed “A Walk of Celebration,” the 2008 Dragon Fire Walk for Athletics certainly lived up to its name. The goal was to celebrate the past success of the event, the success of the current Dragon teams, and to honor the memory of Judy Peterson while raising much needed athletic scholarship dollars. By the end of the day, all items were checked off the list.

The event unofficially kicked off on Monday afternoon when Dragon student athletes, coaches, staff, and fans walked the course at the same time as a show of unity and support of the effort. Supporters continued to walk the MSUM Bookstore course throughout the week cashing in on the support of the bookstore who donated $3 for every person that walked the course.

On Friday night, the Dinner of Celebration doubled last year’s attendance. With a program that included past and present Dragons, the night passed quickly. Current student athletes Kelci Guenther and Bryce Leggins shared their experiences as Dragons, while ‘69 graduate B.A. Schoen shared the story that brought him back to MSUM along with his good friend Gerard Quinn.

The growth trend continued on Saturday as 118 runners registered for the 5K and 10K runs and almost tripled last year’s number of entrants. With the runs getting the day off to a great start, the honorary chairs for the 3rd Annual Dragon Fire Walk for Athletics were introduced. Greg Peterson, Michael Peterson, Marissa Peterson, and Brianne and Jeff Heidbreder were presented plaques in honor of the late Judy Peterson.

Over 400 people then walked the MSUM campus course in support of Dragon Athletics. Gathered back in Alex Nemzek Gymnasium, committee chairman Greg Peterson proudly announced that over $113,000 had been raised as of Saturday morning. Prizes were then presented to the winning fundraising teams. Affinity Plus won the corporate competition, while the MSUM Women’s Basketball team raised more money than any of the teams in the open category.

“Each year I see the Dragon Fire Walk for Athletics getting closer and closer to what we envisioned it to be when we started,” said Greg Peterson, chairman of the committee. “The first year on Saturday morning we were at $96K, last year we were at $106K and this year we were at $113K. At the same time, the number of participants has continued to grow. This is only going to get bigger and better.”

Committee members are Greg Peterson, Bruce and Dea Iserman, Susie McDowell, Wade and Gale Swenson, Larry Nicholson, Jim Taylor, Pat Aarstad, and Larry Nicholson.

The 2009 Dragon Fire Walk for Athletics has been scheduled for April 18th, 2009.
