Alan Davis has published two prize-winning collections of stories. He was born in New Orleans, near the Mississippi's mouth, into a large Catholic family of Italian, French, and Irish ancestry. He grew up in SW Louisiana where, according to a sign out front of Poche's Market, everything on a hog is good. (Go to their website to watch a video on making boudin.) He now lives in Minnesota, near the Mississippi's headwaters among Garrison Keillor's Lutherans, where he teaches in the M.F.A. Program at MSUM and serves as Senior Editor for New Rivers Press, whose dual mission is to publish enduring literature and provide academic learning opportunities for students. "Dakota is everywhere," wrote visionary poet Tom McGrath, who taught at MSUM. The press honors his progressive spirit by publishing work with a strong sense of place that speaks to our troubled times with satyagraha (the truthforce), empathy, and aesthetic courage. Davis has received numerous writing awards, two Fulbright awards (to Indonesia and Slovenia), and recently completed a third collection of stories and a novel.
