CALL FOR PAPERS

Three categories

The MSUM Unity Conference provides a forum to discuss issues pertaining to Latinos, celebrate Latino culture, and create awareness about Latino life. The Unity Conference focuses on topics related to Latinos, including historical, literary, legislative, educational, and cultural issues. This year the Conference program schedule will include opportunities to present papers. Students, faculty/staff and community residents from the Minnesota-North Dakota region and beyond will present their research and scholarship related to Latinos.

Papers are sought in any topic related to the Conference theme -- Sembrando Sueños: Honoring Latinos by Embracing the Past, Celebrating the Present, and Inspiring the Future. Sembrando Sueños means “planting dreams.” All papers related to the focus of the theme will be considered.

Categories

Education professionals - Teaching faculty from any discipline and other professionals, such as counselors and bridge program staff.

College students - Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student in a college or university.

High school students -  Must be enrolled as a junior or senior student in a high school. Home schooled students at an equivalent educational level will be considered. Two presenters will be recognized in this category: one for the paper and one for the presentation.

Paper proposals
Please submit a 200-word (maximum) proposal and include your name, institutional affiliation, and two forms of contact. Please state the category in which your paper will be presented. Submission by e-mail as a Word document is preferred. Please attach the Presentation Application available online.

Paper presentations
Education professional and college presentations should be 15-18 minutes in length. High school presentations should be 12-15 minutes in length. Time limits include five minutes for questions. Submission by e-mail as a Word document is preferred.

A few examples of topics
• Examination of demographic trends
• Significance of historical event or person
• Perspective on cultural traditions/customs
• Analysis of legislation
• Dealing with the unique needs of Latino students
• Effectively teaching Latino students

Complete presentation, including handouts, PowerPoint digital file, and other materials must be received by this date
