Upcoming events ..................

10th Unity Conference, April 14 and 15, 2005 on the MSU Moorhead campus. Other details will be announced later this Fall.

The 14th annual Woodlands and High Plains Powwow, sponsored by Concordia College, Minnesota State University Moorhead, and North Dakota State University, will be held at the NDSU Bison Sports Arena in Fargo on Saturday, April 26, 2003. Grand entries are scheduled at 1 and 7 p.m.

The one-day powwow will be “traditional,” meaning that the emphasis will be on celebration rather than competition.

This year’s theme is “Celebrating Native America,” an idea that came from Esther St. John, a junior majoring in Advertising at MSUM. St. John said the theme is appropriate because of the woodcut art selected to decorate this year’s powwow poster. The artwork was done by NDSU student Marla Yellow Bird, a Chippewa/Assinibone from Trenton, N.D., and depicts an American Indian dancer dressed in a National Reserves uniform, dancing in front of an American flag, and standing atop the world.

View the Powwow Poster  " He Fights For The Flag," a woodcut.

“My dad, Bob St. John, is a veteran and a powwow dancer so I can relate to that,” said Esther St. John, who is from Moorhead. “Celebrating Native America also takes off on the idea that we were here first. We could call the United States, Native America, because that’s what it is to us.”

St. John, whose Indian name is “Owi-dusna-waste-win,” was named head female dancer. She is a member of the Sisseton-Wahpeton Dakota Sioux Nation. Justin Deegan, a senior majoring in Political Science at NDSU, was named head male dancer. Deegan is from Parshall, N.D., and a member of the Three Affiliated Tribes.

The 2003 powwow staff will include: arena director Gabe Desrosiers, Ojibway, from Lake of the Woods, Ontario; master of ceremonies Tom Iron, Hunkpapa, from McLaughlin, S.D.; and cultural adviser George “Joe Bush” Fairbanks, Ojibway, from Ponsford, Minn. Wahpekute, a Dakota drum group from Sisseton, S.D., will be this year’s host drum, and the VFW Post 9061 from the Three Affiliated Tribes, Mandaree, N.D., will serve as honor guard.

For more information about the powwow or to join the committee, contact: Sharon Eagleman, Concordia College, (218) 299-4171; Gus Claymore or Jody Steile, MSUM, (218) 477-2674; or Paul Boswell, NDSU, (701) 231-7314.
