Peer Tutoring Program

The purpose of the MSUM tutoring program is to provide quality supplemental academic assistance to as many students as possible. Tutoring is not meant to be a last minute process. We encourage students to come in as soon as they realize they might be having difficulty.

We have a wide variety of tutors that represent a majority of departments on campus. It is possible that we might not have a tutor for a particular class that you are looking for. Sometimes there is not an interest in tutoring that class or a qualified tutor has not been identified. We do our best to find a tutor for you if we do not have the one that you are looking for. However, it is possible that we won't find one.

HOW DO I GET A TUTOR??

The very first thing that you need to do is come to the MSUM Career Resource Center, Bridges 265. Ask to see the Tutor Coordinator and explain that you are interested in receiving tutoring for a class. If the Tutor Coordinator is not available, come to the Counseling Center across the hall (BR 260) and the front desk worker will be able to help you. You will be asked to fill out a registration form.

Once the registration form is filled out you will need to meet with the Tutor Coordinator to finish the paperwork to be assigned a tutor and to go over the contract. This meeting is mandatory in order to receive tutoring. At this meeting the following things will be covered: how the tutoring program works; the expectations of the tutor and the tutees; rules and regulations that need to be met in order to continue to receive tutoring; and if approved for tutoring, you will be given the name, telephone, and e-mail address of a qualified tutor.

Once you are given the information necessary to contact your tutor, it is then your responsibility to set up an appointment. The tutors are also students so it is essential to plan ahead and give the tutor plenty of notice so that you are not disappointed if they can't meet with you the day you call. The Tutor Coordinator is the key person you will want to contact should you have any problems with the tutoring program.

HOW DO I BECOME A TUTOR??

Tutor selection is mostly based upon recommendations by the chair of the department. We ask the departments to recommend students that they believe have strong communication and teaching skills in addition to a strong academic record. It is required that you have been successful in the class(es) for which you wish to tutor. There are some exceptions to these requirements, but, all exceptions have to be approved by the Counseling Center.

If you think you have been recommended by your department, but you're not sure, stop by the Career Resource Center (BR 265) and ask the Tutor Coordinator or stop by the Counseling Center (260 Bridges Hall) and inquire at the front desk. You can also e-mail requests/questions to the Tutor Coordinator at tutor@mnstate.edu
