Computer Science &
Computer Information Systems

Did you know...

MSUM has the highest percentage of alumni giving in the entire Minnesota State College and University (MnSCU) system. This support is from graduates, former and current faculty and staff, and anonymous donors. MSUM typically awards more than $1.2M in student scholarships a year. More than 80 percent of degree-seeking students receive financial aid that includes scholarships, work study, grants, and loans.

Thanks to the generous donations from our alumni and former and current faculty and staff, the department was able to establish an endowment in 2006 to begin awarding scholarships annually to the top student and now, with the 2008 scholarship, the top two students in the department each receive a $500 scholarship towards their tuition. We have also received gifts through employers of alumni through their employers' gift matching programs.

Beginning in 2006 the department was very proud to award its first two departmental scholarships! One $500 scholarship was awarded to Shelby Hoesel, a Computer Information Systems major, and another $500 scholarship was awarded to Yelena Mejova. The 2007-2008 scholarship was awarded to Kyle Peterson, a computer science major.  The 2008-2009 scholarships were awarded to Joshua Pogatchnik and Justin Voels, both computer science majors.

As you can imagine, the deserving scholarship recipients are very pleased and appreciative of the generous gifts made by alumni as they travel the same path you did in the past.  Here are a few of their comments:

The scholarship is very much appreciated and has surely enhanced my experience with the CSIS Department.  It is truly encouraging to know that the CSIS Department has the ability to offer such financial assistance.” - Shelby Hoesel

Receiving a CSIS scholarship made me see that hard work does pay off and that there are people out there who care about the future of this generation.  One day I too hope to support the students who are striving to get a good education and a successful career.” - Yelena Mejova

"This scholarship has helped me a lot.  It feels great to put aside worry about bills and debt, and focus on what really matters at this point of my life:  learning!" - Kyle Pederson
