Backwoods Ethics
- Minimum impact is the code for the wilderness. Leave as little trace of your passing as possible.
- Use an established campsite when possible.
- When there is no established site, camp on hard ground away from meadows, streams and lakes. Do not trench around tents.
- Use portable stoves for cooking, or cook only in established fire grates or bowls.
- Don't use soap, not even biodegradable soap, in lakes or streams. Use and dump soapy water at least 50 feet form open water.
- Locate toilets well off the trail and at least 50 feet form open water. Bury human waste 6 to 8 inches below surface.
- Pack out all non-burnable trash. Remember the minimum impact code.
- Do not pick, cut, dig, or harm plants
or wildlife. Don't feed the animals. Don't collect wildflowers or other
natural objects or use vegetation in building your shelter.
- Limit the size of your group to have a minimum impact on the wilderness. The Forest Service suggests 10 as a maximum group.
- Shhhh! BE aware that noise pollution is offensive to the wildlife as well as to other campers.
- Stay on the trail. Don't cause erosion by taking shortcuts at switchbacks.
- Leave your dogs and other pets at
home. They may have a negative impact on the wildlife, vegetation, and
other wilderness trekkers.
