Music 319/333: Library/CMC Resources for Teaching Music
1. Locating curriculum bulletins/guides, K-12th grade textbooks, videos, CD-ROMS, juvenile books. Materials (except Reference) circulate for 28 days with no renewals.
a. Browse in call # 780-789 for materials on music topics.
b. For specific topics, do a anywhere in record search on MnPALS.
i. For example, to find children’s books containing rhymes or chants, do a anywhere in record search on MnPALS and add the word juvenile rhymes or chants juvenile
c. Juvenile biographies (both books and videos) are located in the call # 921 and are in alphabetical order by the person they are about. There are also a number of music videos in #920. Collective biographies for children and teens are also in #920. You will find a number of biographies of musicians and/or composers.
d. In addition to non-fiction, there are many stories for children that incorporate music, both in picture books and chapter books.
2. Music/song tape cassettes and CDs are available in the Library. These may be used in the Library or checked out. The tape cassettes are housed in the Media Area on 2nd floor. CDs for children or CDs that accompany K-12 music textbooks are available in the CMC. We have all of the CDs for the textbook series, Share the Music (1995 edition). There are tape cassette/CD players available on the 2nd floor in the Media Listening Room (Library 216). Stereo headphones are available for check-out from the 1st floor Library Reserve Desk.
3. Indexes to children’s songs
a. Children’s Song Index. Curric. Ref. 016.7846 C536—This index provides access to the Library holdings of children’s songs by title that are on tape cassette or CD.
b. Children’s Jukebox: A Subject Guide to Musical Recordings and Programming Ideas for Songsters Ages One to Twelve. Curric. Ref.016.7842 R357c—Provides a way to identify children’s songs on specific topics.
c. Index to Children’ s Songs: A First Line and Subject Index. Curric. Ref. 016.784 P485i—Provides access to children’s songs in books. Most of these books also provide you with the song scores. This index is updated by The Children’s Song Index, 1978-1993. Curric. Ref. 016.78242 C536
4. Locating children’s poetry
a. You can find children’s poems on almost any topic by using the children’s poetry indexes. There are a number of these indexes in the CMC Reference collection. Look under Curric. Ref. 808.81.
b. You may be able to find some poems by searching on MnPALS. Do a anywhere in record under your topic and add the words juvenile poetry. For example: insects juvenile poetry
5. Books on teaching music—In addition to curriculum and textbooks, there are many books in the library general collection on teaching music. To locate these, do a anywhere in record search on MnPALS: INSTRUCTION OR TEACHING MUSIC. To located materials on Kodaly or Orff methods of teaching do a anywhere in record search under these names.
