Languages & Culture
Nibley, Hugh. Nibley on the Timely and the Timeless. Provo, UT: Brigham Young University, 2004.
Dr. Smith chose this book because:
“This book is a sampling of some of the writings of Hugh Nibley and his approach to ancient civilizations and religions. I like the fact that Nibley never made any attempt to soften his descriptions of earlier times by couching them with modern cultural perspectives. He often dove right into ancient texts and swam his way back out. Reading NIbley when I first started college and was deciding on a career awakened me to a sense that the study of language was so much more than the ability to connect with millions of people in the world today, but it connected me culturally with the thoughts and experiences of past civilizations in a way that studying them in translation fails to convey.”
