Faulkner, William. The Sound and the Fury. Penguin, 2006.
Dr. Rowse chose this book because:
“When I was a freshman in high school, I picked up this book off my mom’s bookshelves. I sat down with it and tried to read. A few minutes later, my mom came by, took the book, and told me I needed to wait. She never censured my reading so I was confused. She told me I wasn’t ready yet. As a sophomore in college, I was assigned this book by the toughest professor in the English department. I read the book with relish, partly because I loved the book, and partly because I felt like a real student of literature to read it. It was sort of a marker, an intellectual coming of age.”
