Tick, Judith. Ruth Crawford Seeger: A Composer’s Search for American Music. New York: Oxford University Press, 2000.
Dr. Blunsom chose this book because:
“Ruth Crawford Seeger is a major figure in American music of the twentieth century: a composer, educator, and folk music collector. Judith Tick’s biography of Seeger is a monument in the study of women in music and of American music, masterfully illustrating that one person’s life can tell a much larger story. The book and its subject also have a special meaning for me: Seeger was among the first composers I studied as a musicologist (after having played her music as a pianist). Eventually, I worked as a research assistant on her biography with the author, who became my mentor and friend. Both Seeger and Tick remain inspirations to me in my own work.”
