Admission to Minnesota State University Moorhead is open to students who meet any one of the following guidelines: high school graduation or the GED and the following qualifications are necessary for automatic admission to Minnesota State University Moorhead:

Students whose school records show that they do not meet these criteria, may be admitted to MSUM's Corrick Center for General Education if they show other evidence of potential and determination to succeed in college. Potential Corrick Center students are mailed an admissions questionnaire from the MSUM Admissions Office. On the basis of admissions forms, the questionnaire and a letter of recommendation, the Admissions Committee selects students who demonstrate the potential to succeed at MSUM.

Before applying for admission, many prospective students visit the Corrick Center to dicuss the program, its opportunities, expectations and requirements. Once admitted, students participate in a Dragon Day orientation during late spring or summer. Because the Corrick Center can serve only 200 students each fall, enrollment in the Center may be closed early.

A reciprocity arrangement between Minnesota and North Dakota enables North Dakota residents enrolling at Minnesota State University Moorhead to pay a tuition rate comparable to in-state tuition. Students from South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Manitoba, Canada, and other states can attend Minnesota colleges without paying out-of-state tuition. Students eligible for reciprocity should check with the Registrar to obtain the correct form and instructions on how to apply.

Advantages

  • General Education classes are smaller than the general campus, which helps faculty to advise to each student's strengths.
  • Our pass/variable credit mastery system helps new students achieve success early in their college career. A mastery approach to learning allows students to meet course objectives and requirements at their own pace.
  • Our Center has developed a strong learning community because entrance into our program is limited and our open-door office policy encourages communication between students and faculty.
  • Students take classes in both the Center for General Education as well as other departments on campus, easing the academic transition after completing two to four semesters at the Corrick Center for General Education.
  • Corrick Center for General Education faculty represent the liberal arts disciplines of English, Humanities, Mathematics and Science, so all 100-level or above courses count toward graduation and fulfill liberal studies requirements.

Dragon Days Advising

Incoming students will participate in late spring or summer in Dragon Days, an orientation program designed to acquaint them with the services and procedures of the University and the Corrick Center. At Dragon Days, incoming students to the Center will register for MDS 190 Introduction to Higher Education which will serve as an extended orientation and support course for their success at college. The instructor for the section of MDS 190 that students select will become their advisor and will assist them in orienting to the academic environment and help them put together an appropriate course of study based on the students’ individual strengths, interests, and skills.

Placement and Testing

During Dragon Days, incoming students will undergo a series of tests to assess their current academic knowledge in order to assist in placing them into appropriate courses. Testing will occur in reading and mathematics. Based on the results of these tests, students will be advised to take specific courses in order to fulfill the University’s Liberal Studies requirements.
