Minnesota Merit System Employment/Examination Information - This site includes how to apply and examination procedures.  It lists positions open on a continuous basis for the 75 of 87 MN counties that hire for social work and human services positions via the Merit System (along with links to the 12 counties that do not use the Merit System for hiring).

Apply via the Online Application Center or print the application form pdf on this site and use it to apply for Merit System jobs in Minnesota. If a written test is required, you will be notified of when and where to report.

North Dakota Human Resource Management Services – Here you will find a link to Job Announcements and Internships. This is the site where the Social Worker and related positions will be listed. Read the directions under the Job Seeker tab and also under each job for which you apply.  Be sure to use the ND Human Resource Management Services Application form when you apply for these jobs unless another form is specified in the directions. You must apply separately for every job of interest to you. (Hint: If you select the RTF-formatted application form, and save the completed form to your hard drive or jump drive, you can re-use it each time you apply for a state job by revising the job title and position number when applying for more than one job. The RTF format can be downloaded into word software so you can complete the form via computer and save it—directions are provided.)

Directories/Books

The referenceslisted below are in the Career Services Resource Center, Comstock Memorial Union (CMU) 114. They provide a wealth of information to help candidates research organizations prior to applying for jobs or internships.  If you come in to browse, you will find other recent directories not listed here. These directories can be read and reviewed in the Resource Center but cannot be checked out for further use.

  • 2003/2004 Directory of Community Resources, Cass County, ND & Clay County, MN.  (This is the latest and last paper edition as it is now only provided at the link below.) This book has an alphabetical and a subject index for all of the Not-for-Profit Agencies in Cass/Clay.  It provides contact information, purpose, office hours, services provided to clients, funding sources and eligibility requirements.  Be sure you know at least this much about these area organization before applying for a job or an internship with one or more of them.  You can find this directory information on line at www.myfirstlink.org.  Select the icon in the upper right titled, Community Information Resources Online.
  • Careers in Social Work, by Leon H. Ginsberg.
  • National Directory of Private Social Agencies  Volume 1 & 2.  This directory is updated on a rotating basis so the various sections will have different dates. 
  • Social Work Career Development - A Handbook for Job Hunting and Career Planning, by Carol Nesslein Doelling.
