All
Assignments Must Be Typed
Any
Assignment Turned in Late Will Only be Worth Half The Number of Points
1. Developing a Brochure (30 points) - Objectives 2,3,4
This
assignment has two parts:
A.
The student should bring to class at least two brochures to class on 2/3
and be prepared to share with the entire class what they
like about each brochure and why.
B.
The student will then be assigned a specific disease or disorder for which
they should construct a brochure communicating important health
information. See list posted - the same disease will also be used for
assignment #2. The brochure will be evaluated by the Instructor on the
basis of:
1) Creativity and eye appeal, including neatness; best if typed or
use a desktop publishing program.
2) Organization and effectiveness of the message and all technical word/terms are clearly explained - this must be
written at the 6th grade level.
3) Accuracy of the information.
In completing this assignment the student may use ideas from other
brochures, but should not copy it
exactly.
Excerpt
from Student Handbook:
"When the instructor has
convincing evidence of cheating, including plagiarism, the
following action may be taken:
1) Assign a failing grade to the paper, examination, report, etc.,
on which the student cheated.
2) Assign a failing grade for the course in which the student
cheated".
If
the student would like for examples
of their work to be presented to the NCATE evaluation team
and posted on the web for other students to view, please sign a
release form. If you would like for your work
to be seen by others but you name removed, please indicate this on the
form.

2. In-service Education
- (30 points) - Objectives
1,2,3,4
A.
In-Class part is worth 10 points.
Each
student will be assigned a particular disease or disorder.
The student should then develop an in-service education program
approximately 10 minutes in length. The in-class part of this
assignment can be one of the following:
·
Design and play a
game (question and answers, etc.)
·
Pictures and or
diagrams illustrating some aspect of the disease. If an overhead
transparency is used and words are on it as labels, the minimum font size
should be 26.
·
Role Play and
Interview with someone who is suffering with the assigned disorder.
·
Draw Cartoons
that cover all the information listed below and display them to the class
on transparencies or power point.
·
Give “Multiple
Choice” test questions covering the material listed below and allow
class members to answer these. (True & False questions, essay
questions, etc cannot be used). Then provide the correct answers.
·
OTHER, such as
sing a song, perform a skit, or write a poem, etc. Any way you can think
of to present the information.
THE
ONLY RESTRICTION IS THAT YOU CANNOT READ TO THE CLASS OR USE ANY NOTES TO
READ FROM
(unless you read a poem or sing a song).
The student is expected to practice giving this presentation to see
how long it takes and if there are any problems before it is
presented in class. Any additional handouts, posters, items to be written
on the chalkboard, etc. should be neat and easy to read.
If a video is to be used it must not be a major part of the
presentation.
B. The written part of this assignment is worth 20 points. A “Comprehensive Topic Outline” must contain all of the following categories of information. NOTE: You must use these exact headings, the report must be typed, and all information should be footnoted (NOT JUST A LIST OF REFERENCES AT THE END).
1.
General information regarding morbidity, mortality, incidence and
prevalence.
2.
Type of causative organism or risk factors.
3.
Method(s) of transmission or development
4.

reference sources, other
than the text, should be used (excluding dictionaries) in preparation for
this assignment. One of
the sources must be a reference book from the MSUM Library.
No magazines or newspapers are to be cited and if a web site is used it cannot
be a. com.
NOTE:
The student should be prepared one day ahead of the scheduled time in case
something unavoidable happens and we have to take up that topic early.

3.
Personal Interview
- (20 points) Objectives 3,4
The
student should select one of the chronic diseases that are included
in the course syllabus and find someone, other
than a family member, with that particular condition and interview
him or her. The purpose of
this interview is to find out what it is like to have that condition, so
you should ask minimum of 20 questions. Be sure to number each question asked.
In addition, any question that is answered by a “yes” or “no”
or with one or two words does not count. For example, if you ask “did
this condition cause you pain?” The person being interviewed may answer
yes. However, if you ask, “please describe the onset of you symptoms or
what did it feel like when you first noticed this condition?’ – the
answer is more likely to be comprehensive and cannot be answered with a
yes or no.
The
students should make up their own questions before conducting the
interview. A final report
should include the questions and answers, along with the name, address and
telephone number of the person interviewed.
