INTERNSHIP OFFERS INSIDE TRACK

Competition for established internships is stiff, Mark Oldman said, as more collegians today (77 percent) complete at least one, compared with just 3 percent in 1980. Oldman is co-author with Samer Hamadeh "The Internship Bible (IB)" and "America's Top Internships (ATI)"

"In today's golden job market, we're seeing an internship craze" as more colleges give valuable academic credits for them and as   businesses "increasingly see them as a powerful way of recruiting full-time hires," Oldman said.

Companies that hire more than half of their former interns, according to ATI, include Atlantic Records, New York; Chevron Corp., San Francisco; Ford Motor Co., Allen Park, Mich.; Hewlett-Packard Co., Palo Alto, Calif.; Intel Corp., Folsom, Calif.; Kraft General Foods, Northfield, Ill.; Marvel Comics, New York; Procter & Gamble, Cincinnati; Random House, Inc., New York; 3M, St. Paul, Minn.; Union Carbide Corp., Hahnville, La.; and Weyerhaeuser, Tacoma, Wash.

Although the Internship Bible lists more than 100,000 internships, Oldman nevertheless said some people can profit if they "create their own internships where none exists." In his view, there's a lot less competition when you create your own, and "the level of responsibility can be much greater." Oldman believes if you can convince an individual or company to set up a new internship, you're galloping on an inside track. The Walt Disney Studios, Burbank, Calif., for instance, accept only 20 interns annually of 1,000 who apply, IB reports. Then again, established internships usually have job descriptions that spell out an intern's duties, often narrowly, so there's not a lot of leeway in them for creativity. To make your own internship, Oldman said pick some firm or individual you admire, and write "an enthusiastic letter." If you get hired and learn the ropes, Oldman said, don't be shy about requesting "better assignments" and "more responsibility," since a lot of an intern's job can be "self-made." If your ideal company has never had an intern before, you should negotiate pay with a good idea of  what interns in its field earn. IB reports that high-tech firms pay among the best; publishers less; and nonprofits little or nothing. Thus, an intern's weekly pay at Microsoft Corp., Redmond, Wash., could reach $650; at Newsday, of Melville, N.Y., $510; and at the San Francisco Opera, zero.

Oldman reminds that while this is "the perfect season" to apply for a summer internship, it's often better to serve one in the fall or spring, when many organizations -- -- are in high-gear.

One last thought: you don't have to be a college student to seek an internship. You could be employed -- or even unemployed.
It's up to you.

Checklist of Possible Internship Sources
(Check each one as you use it in your search for an internship)
___ Network with current and former employers, coworkers, friends, neighbors, family
college professors, people you meet when traveling or socializing to let them know the
type of internship you are seeking and to see if they have heard of an internship or might
suggest an organization for you to contact regarding the possibility of an
internshipyou just might be the first intern the organization has hired. If you do a
great job that organization may become a site for future internships and you may be hired.
___ Watch the internship listings each week that arrive via DragonCareers and that are listed on
the MSUM Career Services web site under Internships. Select Internship Listings or go to
http://www.mnstate.edu/career/internships/main.html.
Internships that come directly to Career Services will be listed by the semester in which
the organization wishes to have an intern. Do not apply after the deadline.

___ Your major department may keep a listing of all previous sites where internships
have been served. Review the list and contact organizations of interest to learn if they
anticipate the need for an intern in the semester/summer you desire to serve one. Some
students take a paid internship as their first job following graduation to gain experience.
___ Many corporations/organizations list internships on their corporate web sites under Careers
or Employment Opportunities or other links.

do not miss deadlines.
