MATHEMATICS-RECOMMENDATIONS (Recommendations Concerning The Mathematics Requirements For Biology Majors And Those In Closely Related Areas)
Students may begin their college mathematics study in any one of several courses depending on their math background and their score on the math placement test. Every incoming freshman will take a math placement test during orientation and prior to registration. Transfer students may also take this test. The results of this test will assist the student and advisor in selecting the most appropriate math classes.
I. The following information, provided by the Mathematics Department, will assist you in the selection of the most appropriate mathematics classes.
Entry level courses based on MnSCU placement test scores.
Entry level courses based on ACT test scores.
II. Current math course descriptions On-Line
III. Students whose programs require a year of calculus should complete Math 261 (Calculus I) and Math 262 (Calculus II).
IV. Statistics is a highly recommended math elective for all majors in the Biology Department as well as many of the pre-professional programs. The following statistics classes are available:
Math 234 (4 credits) Elementary Probability and Statistics. This is the most appropriate statistics class for most students. Students who take Math 234 may not take Math 236 or 238.
Math 236 (4 credits) Applied Statistics. This class may be elected but is directed toward non-science groups and is not recommended for most students in the majors listed above.
Math 238 (2 credits) Statistical Methods. This class may be elected by students who have completed Math 236.
V. One computer class may be used as a related field elective. Computer classes may not be used to meet the Liberal Studies Category E-1 requirement. Computer literacy is important for all science students. Students who wish to take computer science classes should consult with their advisor regarding the most appropriate course.
