MSUM TO ENTER NSIC OUTDOOR
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SCHEDULE- - - Minnesota State University Moorhead man and women will enter the 2008 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday and Saturday, May 9-10, at Memorial Stadium in Wayne, NE.
COACH - - - Keith Barnier, a letterwinner at MSU Moorhead as an undergraduate, is in his sixth season as head men and women’s track coach. Barnier is assisted by Dave Bergstrom, Jon Heath, Keith Knoke, Cley Twigg and Scott Wavrin.
MASANZ INVITATIONAL- - - MSU women finished second in a 10-team field with 118 points while Dragon men placed sixth among 12 teams at the 2008 Ron Masanz Invitational last Saturday at MSUM. North Dakota State captured both the men’s (194) and women’s (205.5) titles. Anna VanWechel set a new record with a winning time of 18:02.10 in the women’s 5000 and finished second in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:39.16. Jennifer Hensel placed first in the women’s pole vault, 3.75, and second in the 100, 12.42, while Derik Brugger was second in the men’s vault, 4.75. Rayna Berndt second in the women’s 5000, 18:57.58,and the women’s 4 x 400 relay team of Sara Julsud, Alison Streyle, Ashley Roemer and Kristina Anderson was second at 3:51.43.
MACALESTER TWILIGHT- - - Minnesota State Moorhead men produced three first place finishes at the Macalester Twilight April 30. Jeff Brunnette was first in the 100 meters, 10.88, Scott Egeberg won the 3000 meter steeplechase, 9:35.74, and the 4 x 400 relay crew posted a winning time of 3:19.80.
DRAKE RELAYS- - - The Dragon women’s 4 x 400 relay team of Sara Julsrud, Alison Streyle, Ashley Roemer and Kristina Anderson finished fifth with a time of 3:51.07 at the Drake Relays at Des Moines, IA. The Al Cassell Relays, scheduled for Jamestown College last Saturday, was cancelled.
FALLIN’ RECORDS- - - For a second time this week, an established Minnesota State Moorhead outdoor track record evaporated when Sara Julsrud breezed to a time of 62.56 in the 400 hurdles at the Tommie Twilight in April. Julsrud is ranked 17th nationally. In addition, Anna VanWechel provisionally qualified for the 2008 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a 4:39.58 clocking in the 1500 meters. Earlier in the week Ashley Roemer shattered the MSUM outdoor and NSIC record of 4,755 points in the heptathlon at the NSIC Multi-Events meet at Aberdeen, SD.
KANSAS RELAYS- - - Jennifer Hensel soared to a school record 13-7 ¼ to capture the women’s pole vault title at the 81st annual Kansas Relays while Ashley Roemer flashed to a winning time of 2:11.16 in the unseeded 800 meter race at Lawrence, KS. Roemer's time ranks fourth nationally and provisionally qualifies for the 2008 NCAA II Outdoor. The Dragon 4 x 400 relay team of Sara Julsrud, Alison Streyle, Roemer and Kristina Anderson placed fifth at 3:50.98.
UMM OPEN- - - Freshman Jeff Brunnette was a double winner at the UMM April 19 at Morris. Brunnette swept the 100 meters, 11.22, and the 200, 22.31.
COBBER TWILIGHT- - - Jennifer Hensel soared 13-3 ½ for a new MSUM outdoor pole vault record to headline Dragon performances at Tuesday’s Cobber Twilight in Moorhead. MSUM also received first place finishes from Sara Julsrud in the 400 meter hurdles, 64.96, Kirby Black in the long jump, 17-4 ¾, Ashley Roemer in the high jump, 5-3 ¾, and the 4 X 100 meter relay team of Alison Streyle, Kristina Anderson, Julsrud and Hensel. Both Dragon men and women placed fourth.
BISON OPEN- - - Minnesota State Moorhead claimed one first place and six seconds at the Bison Open at Fargo, ND on Sunday. In the women’s competition, Jennifer Hensel was first in the pole vault, 12-6, and the Dragons received runnerup performances from Sara Julsrud in the 400 meter hurdles, 1:03.41, Anna VanWechel in the 3000, 10:05.19, Ashley Roemer in the high jump, 5-6, the 4 x 100 relay crew of Alison Streyle, Kristina Anderson, Julsrud and Hensel and the 4 x 400 relay team of Julsrud, Streyle, Roemer and Anderson, 3:53.65. Sara Rebenitsch was third in the 3000 meter steeplechase, 11:58.36. Jeff Brunnette was second in the men’s 200 meters, 22.75, and third in the 100, 11.17, and Kyle Eckhoff was third in the 1500, 4:00.22.
EULER STATE FARM/ESU RELAYS- - - MSU Moorhead officially christened the 2008 outdoor track season at the Euler State Farm/ESU Relays at Emporia, KS April 5. In the women’s events Anna VanWechel was third in the 1500 meters, 4:44.58, Ashley Roemer third in the 800, 2:14.00, Sara Julsrud third in the 400 meter hurdles, 1:03.50, Alison Streyle fourth in the 400 meter hurdles, 1:04.00, and Kaylyn Monke fourth in the pole vault, 11-0 ½. The Dragons were also third in the 4 x 400 meter relay with a time of 3:57.30. In the men’s competition Scott Egeberg was third in the 3000 meter steeplechase, 10:00.09, Adam Kne third in the men’s 5000, 15:40.80, Leighton Reuess fourth in the steeplechase, 10:13.91 and Kyle Eckhoff fourth in the 5000, 15:44.70.
NCAA II INDOOR - - - Minnesota State Moorhead crowned two All-Americans and placed 13th in the women’s competition at the 2008 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships at Mankato March 14-15. Ashley Roemer produced a pair of All-American performances and placed second in the high jump, 5-7, and sixth in the 800 meters, 2:13.78. Jennifer Hensel earned All-American honors and tied for third in the women's pole vault, 12-9 ½, while Matt Jahnke placed 13th in the men's pole vault.
ALL-AMERICANS- - - Ashley Roemer and Jennifer Hensel were decorated with All-American honors at the 2008 NCAA Division II Indoor.
NCAA II NATIONAL INDOOR- - - MSUM was represented by senior Matt Jahnke, pole vault, and juniors Jennifer Hensel, pole vault, and Ashley Roemer, high jump and 800 meters, at the 2008 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships.
2008 NSIC INDOOR- - - MSU Moorhead women finished second and MSUM men fourth at the 2008 NSIC Indoor Championships at Bemidji March 7-8. The Dragon women received firsts from Ashley Roemer in the high jump, 5-5 ¼, 800, 2:16.33, and pentathlon, 3,517, Anna VanWechel in the mile, 5:10.55, Kaylyn Ronke in the pole vault, 11-1, the 4 X 400 relay cast of Sara Julsrud, Alison Streyle, Kristina Anderson and Roemer, 3:55.64, and the distance medley relay, 12:14.57. Scott Egeberg was the men’s lone champion in the 5000, 15:25.17. University of Mary captured the women’s title with 177 points while MSU Moorhead was second in a field of seven with 131 points. Mary claimed the men’s crown as well with 127 points while MSUM was fourth in a field of six teams with 79 points.
BEWARE OF FALLING RECORDS- - - Ashley Roemer had a hand in four record-setting performances at the NSIC Indoor. Roemer set new individual marks in the 800, 2:16.33, and pentathlon, 3,517, and was a member of the 4 X 400 relay, 3:55.64, and the distance medley relay, 12:14.57.
HONORS- - - Ashley Roemer was named NSIC Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Year while Anna VanWechel was named NSIC Women’s Newcomer of the Year.
COBBER OPEN- - - Ashley Roemer headlined the MSU Moorhead performance at the Cobber Open February 22 by setting a Dragon indoor record of 2:12.14 in the 800 meters, one of seven MSUM first place finishes. The Dragons also received firsts from Alison Streyle in the 200, 26.94, Kristina Anderson in the 400, 60.83, Anna VanWechel in the 1000, 3:01.68, the 4 X 400 meter relay crew of Sara Julsrud, Streyle, Kirby Black and Anderson, 4:02.47, Jennifer Hensel in the pole vault, 12-0, Kyle Eckhoff in the men’s 1000, 2:36.22, and Scott Egeberg in the men’s mile, 4:30.56. Roemer and VanWechel set Olson Forum records and Hensel matched the pole vault mark.
BISON CLASSIC- - - MSU Moorhead produced one first place finish and four seconds at the Bison Classic February 16 at North Dakota State University in Fargo, ND. Ashley Roemer captured the women’s high jump, 5-7, and the Dragons received runnerup finishes from Sara Julsrud in the 800, 2:20.37, Anna VanWechel in the mile, 5:15.53, the 4 X 400 relay crew of Julsrud, Alison Streyle, Kirby Black and Kristina Anderson, 4:00.34, and Scott Egeberg in the men’s 3000, 8:53.52.
NSIC MULTI-EVENTS- - - Ashley Roemer placed first in the pentathlon with a NSIC and MSUM record 3,517 points at the 2008 NSIC Multi-Events meet at Aberdeen, SD.
COBBER DUAL- - - MSU Moorhead withdrew from the Beaver Classic and joined Concordia College for a dual at Concordia February 9. MSUM women claimed 12 first place finishes and Dragon men 10. Ashley Roemer was first in the 400, 58.52, and high jump, 5-5, Alison Streyle won the 200 meters, 26.94, and was a member of both the winning 4 X 200 relay, 1:49.07, and 4 X 400 relay, 4:06.15, while Sara Julsrud was first in the 1000, 3:12.46, and a member of both winning relay teams as well.
BISON OPEN- - - MSU Moorhead collected a pair of first place finishes at the Bison Open at North Dakota State February 2. In the women’s competition, Ashley Roehmer was first in the 800 meters, 2:14.17, and Danielle Thompson placed first in the 3000, 10:52.42, and the Dragons received runnerup finishes from Sara Julsrud in the 600, 1:39.43, and Anna VanWechel in the mile, 5:08.68. Adam Kne was third in the men’s 3000 with a clocking of 8:59.48.
NSIC HONORS- - - Percy Watson was named the NSIC Men’s Track Athlete of the Week January 28 for sweeping the 100 and 200 meters and contributing to a pair of winning relay performances at the Cobber Duals January 26. A three-time winner, Sara Julsrud was named the NSIC Women’s Track Athlete of the Week February 11.
COBBER DUALS- - - MSU Moorhead men and women fashioned 6-0 records at the Cobber Duals January 26. Percy Watson swept the men’s 200, 23.09, and 400, 50.42, and was a member of the winning 4 X 200 relay, 92.89, and distance medley relay, 10:40.34. Kyle Eckhoff was first in the 600, 1:25.52, and Nick Meseck won the high jump, 6-0. MSUM women received first place finishes from Kristina Anderson in the 200, 27.42, Sara Julsrud in the 400, 60.64, Ashley Roemer in the 600, 1:37.09, Rayna Berndt in the mile, 5:24.93, Danielle Thompson in the 3000, 10:57.31, Ashley Hagen in the high jump, 5-1 ¾, Jennifer Hensel in the pole vault, 12-6, and the distance medley relay crew of Roemer, Alison Streyle, Julsrud and Anna VanWechel, 12:21.23.
SUPER EIGHT- - - Minnesota State Moorhead claimed nine first place finishes at the Super Eight Open at Bemidji January 19. Ashley Roemer captured the women’s 800 meters, 2:17.35, and high jump, 5-5, Sara Julsrud was first in the 600, 1:39.23, Jennifer Hensel soared 12-5 ½ to win the pole vault and the 4 X 400 relay crew posted a winning time of 4:01.06. Percy Watson swept the men’s 200, 22.87, and 400, 50.96, Adam Kne was first in the 5000, 15:55.87, and Kyle Eckhoff was first in the 800, 2:00.79, and second in the mile, 4:24.94.
NORTHWEST OPEN- - - MSU Moorhead women claimed four first place finishes, including Jennifer Hensel in the 60 meters, 8.15, Sara Julsrud in the 400 meters, 61.36, Anna VanWechel in the mile, 5:14.17, and the 4 X 400 relay team, 4:01.23, at the Northwest Open in Minneapolis January 12. In the men’s competition Scott Egeberg placed first in the 3000, 8:38.51.
ALL-AMERICANS- - - The Dragons retain a pair of All-American pole vaulters, senior Derik Brugger (Dickinson, ND) and junior Jennifer Hensel (Frazee).
QUALIFIERS- - - Jennifer Hensel, Matt Jahnke and Ashley Roemer both provisionally qualified for the 2008 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships at the MSU Pre-Season Open December 8 at Mankato. Hensel and Jahnke have qualified in the pole vault and Roemer in both the 800 meters and the high jump.
CAPTAINS- - - Seniors Derik Brugger (Dickinson, ND) and Dustin Lillegaard (Bagley) will captain the men’s team while seniors Oluseyi Amele (Robbinsdale) and Rayna Berndt (Bainville, MT) and junior Jennifer Hensel (Frazee) share captaincy honors for Dragon women.
NEXT- - - MSU Moorhead will send qualified athletes to the 2008 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 22-24 at Pomona, CA.
