DRAGONS PLACE FOURTH AT NSIC TOURNAMENT

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 21, 2008

SCHEDULE - - - Minnesota State University Moorhead completed its 2008 season with a fourth place finish at the eight-team field at the 2008 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championships on Saturday and Sunday in Minneapolis.

RECORD- - - MSU Moorhead finished 4-13 overall and 4-5 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

COACH - - - Gary Harris begins his 13th year as head coach at MSU Moorhead.

LAST WEEK- - - Minnesota State Moorhead fell to Concordia College, 7-2, on Tuesday, and placed fourth at the 2008 NSIC Championships last weekend in Minneapolis. Winona State captured the team title with 58 points while the Dragons finished fourth with 35.Alyssa Schafer was a runnerup at number six singles and earned honorable mention All-NSIC honors. Schafer fell to Trisha Baldwin of Southwest Minnesota State 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 in the finals.

HONORS- - - Alyssa Schafer earned her second NSIC Tennis Player of the Week award April 15. Schafer was also saluted as the NSIC Tennis Player of the Week February 18.

LETTERWINNERS- - - MSUM retains seven letterwinners, including seniors Maria Cederberg (Princeton), Claudia Irina (Oakdale) and Kayla Parker (Bismarck, ND), juniors Laura Benz (Fargo, ND), Ellen Matheson (Moorhead) and Alyssa Schafer (Mandan, ND) and sophomore Ashley Taborsky (Bismarck, ND).

NEW FACES- - - The 11-player Dragon roster also includes sophomore Traci Pesta (Long Prairie) and freshmen Tracie Eeten (Pipestone), Susan Gilkerson (Brookings, SD) and Lexie Moon (Fergus Falls).

LAST YEAR - - - MSU Moorhead finished 10-9 overall and 4-1 in NSIC matches.

2007 NSIC CHAMPIONSHIPS- - - MSU Moorhead placed second at the six-team 2007 NSIC Championships behind Winona State. Beth Helgeson earned first team All-NSIC honors for winning the number six singles title while Rose Milless, a runnerup at number two, and Laura Benz, second at number five singles, were honorable mention All-NSIC in singles. Beth Helgeson and Maria Cederberg paired to win number three doubles and earn first team All-NSIC laurels while Milless and Miranda Quast placed second at number one doubles and were honorable mention All-NSIC.

COACH OF THE YEAR- - - Gary Harris was saluted as NSIC Coach of the Year for guiding MSUM to a runnerup finish at the 2007 NSIC Championships for a third straight year. Harris also won the award in 1998 and 2002.

NEXT- - - MSU Moorhead completed its season at the NSIC Tournament April 19-20.
