Second seed Winona State University pinned a 6-1 loss on Minnesota State University Moorhead on Saturday in the opening round of the 2008 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference softball tournament at Marshall, MN. Minnesota State Moorhead solved a six-game losing streak with a 4-3, 4-1sweep of touring Bemidji State University in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader at Alex Nemzek Field on Wednesday. Kari Sagehorn tossed a four-hitter in a complete game victory in the opener while Casey Preston plated the winning run with an eighth inning base hit. Minnesota State Moorhead launched its 2008 home opener with a split with University of Mary on Tuesday at Alex Nemzek Field. MSUM blanked Mary 8-0 in the opener but fell 7-6 in the nightcap. Kari Sagehorn tossed a three-hit shutout in game one while the Dragons produced 12 base hits, including a home run by Lacey Bunkelman. Another midwest spring snowstorm has caused scheduling changes for Minnesota State Moorhead. The NSIC softball opener at Aberdeen, SD between MSU Moorhead and Northern State, slated for Wednesday, has been postponed and will be reset for April 28 at Aberdeen, SD. The Dragon track team will switch sites this weekend, enrolling in the Euler State Farm/ESU Relays at Emporia, KS on Saturday, April 5, instead of the UNI Messersmith Invitational at Cedar Falls, IA. . .

Emporia State University and Minnesota State University Moorhead divided a non-conference softball doubleheader at Emporia, KS on Friday. Emporia State posted a 5-2 victory in game one to halt a six-game MSUM win streak while Melissa Saylor homered for the Dragons. Julie Vancura, 5-2, was the winning pitcher in the second game as Lacey Bunkelman belted a two-run home run to spark a 2-1 Dragon victory. TARDY SPRING FORCES CHANGES IN DRAGON ATHLETIC AGENDA
Projections for a cold weekend have necessitated changes in the spring sports schedule at MSU Moorhead. A dual track meet with University of St. Thomas, scheduled for Saturday in St. Paul, has been scrubbed. The Dragon softball team departed a day early for Emporia, KS and will meet Emporia State in a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Friday, instead of Sunday. In addition, the Augustana Invitational women's golf tournament, scheduled for this weekend in Sioux Falls, SD, has been cancelled. . . .

DRAGONS CLOSE SOUTHERN SOFTBALL TRIP WITH SWEEP
Minnesota State Moorhead exited in style from the 2008 Rebel Games at Orlando, FL with a sweep of Ashland University, 4-1, and Northwood University, on Friday afternoon. Julie Vancura was credited with the victory in the opener while Kari Sagehorn was the winning pitcher in the second game. Sagehorn and Casey Lindseth had a pair of hits each against Ashland while Casey Preston delivered Mandy Adolph with the winning run with a first inning single against Northwood. Saginaw Valley State swept Minnesota State Moorhead, 4-3 and 4-3, at the Rebel Games in Orlando, FL on Wednesday. BOYES NAMED HEAD SOFTBALL COACH AT MSUM
Kristin Boyes, a member of championship clubs at Southwest Minnesota State University the past two years, has been named head softball coach at Minnesota State University Moorhead. Doug Peters, Director of Athletics at MSUM, made the announcement today. Boyes replaces Rhonda Denbow who resigned in May after three seasons as head coach at MSU Moorhead. . .

VANCURA NAMED TO DAKTRONICS TEAM
Junior Julie Vancura was named to the second team of the 2007 .DAKTRONICS. All-Region softball team. Vancura finished 19-8 with a 2.30 earned run average and helped the Dragons finish 33-20 overall. . .
