“Being a college athlete can be stressful, strenuous, and tiring. It is hard work to be a college athlete, but there are perks that come along with it. One benefit of playing is having younger basketball players admire us and look up to us. College athletes are not the only people that can be role models. People who battle cancer have to endure things that we can’t imagine. Their hard work, perseverance, and wishful thinking has made us admire them and their never give up attitude. This weekend the MSUM women’s basketball team is dedicating our basketball games to all of the women who had, are, and will battle cancer. We greatly appreciate everyone who donated money to help us buy our pink jerseys so now we can represent and play for our heroes.”
-Betsy Dickson

“I am dedicating this game to my Aunt Susan who passed away two years ago from lung and brain stem cancer. She was a wonderful woman who was a big support system for me and was someone that I looked up to as a positive role model while I was growing up. Her passing was an extremely hard time for my family, but she will live on through our memories.”
-Chris Falzon

“I don’t feel I can dedicate this game to just one person. I dedicate this game to all: those who are currently battling cancer, survivors, and those loved ones who have passed on. To my grandpa Don Marks, grandma Shirley Marks, and grandpa Bernie Fesenmaier who are up among the angels watching over me. My uncle Jim Marks is currently trying to defeat this evil, and everyday I pray for him. Tammy Schlichting is also in my thoughts and prayers. She is a strong woman, and I hope for all the best for her. To L.W. Gibson just shy of a year survivor of defeating colon cancer, hoping he stays strong and healthy. To all who came tonight to support us, know the Dragon Women’s Basketball team and staff supports you.”
-Jessica Fesenmaier

“I’m dedicating this game to my grandmother Lorraine Froelich. She has battled breast cancer twice and survived. She is currently in remission and in great health. Love you Grandma and Grandpa; thanks for supporting the Dragons over the past four years!”
-Cydney Froelich

“I am dedicating this weekend to my grandma Kline and grandpa Lemke. My grandma Kline is a survivor of breast cancer. My grandpa Lemke is currently battling prostate cancer. Both are very strong people, and I am glad to be able to dedicate this weekend to them.”
-Tiffany Kline

“I’m dedicating this game to two family friends: Ruth Mooney and Christa Ingison who are both survivors of breast cancer. I am very proud of their courage and resilience over the years.”
-Alison Nash-Gerlach

“I’m dedicating this game to my great aunt Joan Bertsch who fought kidney cancer and has been cancer free for four years. I would also like to dedicate this game to my friend, Annalynn Pedersen, who lost the battle with a brain tumor. I admire their strength and courage through the surgeries and treatments they endured. Although Annalynn is no longer with us, she will always be remembered.”
-Jenny Oligmueller

“I am dedicating this game to Tina Junker who was a survivor of breast cancer. I admire her effort to fight this disease!”
-Krista Opheim

“I would like to dedicate this weekend to my grandpa Bill Paulson. He has been diagnosed for the second time with lung cancer. I know with his positive attitude and determination to beat this horrible cancer, he will. Love you grandpa!”
-Megan Rettke

“I’d like to dedicate our games this weekend to my loving grandmother, Arletta Soule, who battled and survived breast cancer. Love you Grams!”
-Shelly Soule

“I would like to dedicate this weekend to Faye Von Loh. Faye was my uncle and passed away on February 18, 2001 from colon cancer. He was the oldest of nine children and my mother will say, “he was the glue that held it all together.” He fought the disease for almost a year, but he always downplayed the severity of his situation because he only cared about others. Faye never got to see me play in any of my basketball games, but I always know he is watching over me. Today is an extremely special day for me, and I am honored that I have this opportunity to play for my uncle Faye.”
-Allison Swenson

“I am dedicating this weekend in memory of my Grandma Marilyn Halsey, who passed away from breast cancer. She was an extremely caring woman who inspired me in so many ways.”
-Jenny Theisen

“I’m dedicating this “Think Pink” weekend to all those who have battled cancer. The determination and will to live is truly inspiring. Thanks for fighting!”
-Katie Walden

MOORHEAD, MN (January 28, 2008) - - - Minnesota State University Moorhead is proud to participate in the 2008 “Think Pink” Breast Cancer Awareness program sponsored by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, according to Dragon head coach Karla Nelson and Director of Athletics Doug Peters.

“We’re excited about it,” said Nelson. “It will be a fun event, and our young ladies are excited to participate just knowing they are trying to be a part of the cure. If we can help bring awareness about breast cancer and educate some people, it will be a great thing.”

The Dragons have scheduled a variety of events for a February 8 game with Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference rival Northern State University, including an online auction from February 7-10 with all proceeds going to the Roger Maris Cancer Center in Fargo, ND. The online auction can be found at www.msumdragons.com.

The Dragons have special-ordered pink game uniforms with part of the cost going to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer fund. In addition, pink t-shirts and lapel pins will be distributed at the game, the Lisbon (ND) Acro Team will perform at halftime and breast cancer survivors will also be honored.

"Few people know that breast cancer is the most invasive cancer amongst women in the U.S. As a business woman in our community I want people to be aware of the dangers of breast cancer and the fact that early detection finds cancer when it is most treatable and increases the chances of survival," said Cheri Johnson, owner of Personal Touch Embroidery and Marketing, corporate sponsor of the event. "At the same time I want to support the effort to make a difference by the MSUM women's basketball team because those young women are our future leaders."

According to Nelson, the “Think Pink” event has grown from 120 schools participating last year to over 650 this winter.
