Fresh from the holiday recess, Minnesota State University Moorhead men and women returned to basketball practice this week in preparation for final pre-conference tuneups before the fulltime resumption of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play. MSU Moorhead men host Mayville State University in a 3 p.m. Saturday matinee while the Dragon women celebrate New Year’s Eve in a 7 p.m. meeting with Valley City State University on Monday night at Valley City, ND. The Dragons return to league action in a taxing roadtrip to University of Mary and Northern State University January 4-5.
MSUM MEMOS. . . . . Former Dragon quarterback MARC TRESTMAN has been named head coach of the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League. Trestman previously served as an assistant coach with 10 NFL clubs, including a stint as offensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings. Trestman followed ED SCHULTZ, the NCAA II national passing champ, at quarterback for Moorhead State in 1978. . . . . JESSICA FESENMAIER is ranked third in the NCAA II in field goal percentage, .647, while ALLISON SWENSON is 13th, .608. Fesenmaier is 12th in blocked shots, 2.4, while KRISTA OPHEIM is 62nd in assists, 4.7. . . . . Swenson has moved to ninth on the Dragon career scoring chart with 1,178 points while Fesenmaier is 10th at 1,173 points. A four-year starter at State, Fesenmaier is the Dragons’ career shot block leader with 178. . . . . Ex-Dragon LISA DORNACKER is BLAKE STROUTH became the newest member of the 1,000 point club at MSU Moorhead December 8 with 14 points in the 70-49 victory over Minnesota, Crookston to reach the 1,000-point plateau. Strouth has scored 1,035 points in four seasons at State. . . . . Ex-Dragon LISA DORNACKER is averaging 4.5 ppg as a senior for Valley City State. . . . . The MSU Moorhead women’s swimming and diving team, ranked sixth on the latest NCAA Division II national poll, will compete in the Orange Bowl Classic January 5 at Key Largo, FL. . . . . The Dragons climbed to 14th on the NCAA Division II Coaches’ pre-season wrestling poll. MSUM, 4-0, visits national power Augsburg College January 3. . . . . Freshman goalkeeper ALISON WANNNER (Mandan, ND) finished fifth on the final 2007 NCAA Division II national statistical chart for saves, 9.5, and 11th in save percentage, .0.860. . . . . JENNIFER HENSEL and ASHLEY ROEMER both provisionally qualified for the 2008 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships at the MSU Pre-Season Open in early December at Mankato. . . . . Yes, the Dragons still hit the books before they hit the field. In all, 27 student-athletes from five different teams will receive NSIC All-Academic honors for fall. . . . . The Dragons have unveiled a new athletic website designed by TOM CHALLEY. . . . . The next Dragon Fire luncheon is scheduled for Wednesday, January 9, at the Courtyard by Marriott in Moorhead. . . . . Dragon basketball games are broadcast over ESPN Radio 1660 AM.
