It’s another opening, another show for Minnesota State University Moorhead on Tuesday night when the Dragon men visit cross-town rival Concordia College, the first of three games on an ambitious non-conference docket this week. Following Tuesday’s meeting with the Cobbers, the MSUM will face Lake Superior State at 6 p.m. on Friday and Graceland University at 6 p.m. on Saturday at the Barnett Center in Aberdeen, SD. Stocked with eight returning letterman, including all five starters, MSUM was ranked fourth in the 10-team NSIC Coaches’ pre-season poll. Next week MSU Moorhead hosts St. Cloud State November 27 and launches NSIC play at Concordia University December 1.

MSUM MEMOS. . . . . Dragon women, 1-1, invade St. Cloud State University for a 7 p.m. non-conference basketball reunion on Wednesday and host the number one ranked team in NCAA Division II—University of North Dakota—at 5 p.m. on Saturday. . . . . Junior CALLA OFTEDAHL was a second team selection on the 2007 Daktronics Division II North Central Region volleyball team. . . . . Two Dragon divers, senior SARAH CHAUSSEE and sophomore KAYLA KOENIG, have already met qualifying standards for the 2008 NCAA Division II Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships. . . . . Minnesota State Moorhead is ranked sixth on the most recent NCAA II Women’s Swimming and Diving poll, the Dragons’ highest ranking ever. . . . . Minnesota State Moorhead enjoyed a most rewarding fall athletic campaign in the NSIC, capturing championships in men and women’s cross-country and runnerup finishes in both soccer and volleyball. . . . . Junior center MEGHAN RETTKE has been shelved for the season following shoulder surgery. . . . . Three Dragons claimed runnerup finishes at last Saturday’s Cobber Open, including DEREK BOMSTAD at 141, TALLEN WALD at 157 and MATT NELSON at 197. . . . . Yes, the Dragons still hit the books before they hit the field. In all, 27 student-athletes from five different teams will receive NSIC All-Academic honors for fall. . . . . The Dragons will launch the 2007-08 track season at the MSU Pre-Season Open at Mankato December 8. . . . . MSU Moorhead graduate MARK GULSETH is the new head baseball coach at Northern State. . . . . The Minnesota Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame has announced a couple of major awards for ex-Dragons AL GOEDEN and SPENCER YOHE. A native of Staples, Goeden will receive the State Courage Award this spring. A transfer from Itasca Community College and a two-year letterman at State, Goeden survived a hunting accident that left him paralyzed below the waist to make a significant contribution to the sport. According to Minnesota Chapter Vice-President Scot Davis: “Goeden overcame adversity to be one of the top Boy Scout leaders and Board of Directors while giving back. . . by serving as a youth and junior high school coach for the past 20 years.” A graduate of Winona State, Yohe charted a rewarding high school coaching career and later served as an assistant at MSU Moorhead under John Sterner. . . . . The Dragons rank 15th on the NCAA Division II Coaches’ pre-season wrestling poll. JARRETT HALL, 174, ranks sixth individually. . . . . The Dragons have unveiled a new athletic website designed by TOM CHALLEY. . . . . The next Dragon Fire luncheon is scheduled for Wednesday, November 28, at the Courtyard by Marriott in Moorhead. . . . . Dragon basketball games are broadcast over ESPN Radio 1660 AM.
