It’s a Willie Nelson Weekend for Dragon athletics---On The Road Again---as all Minnesota State Moorhead athletic teams face road tests. The Dragon soccer team packed a 2-4 overall record for a Wednesday non-conference date at Northern State University. MSUM has a 1 p.m. Saturday matinee at University of Mary as well. MSUM, 6-3 overall and 1-1 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, faces league volleyball matches at University of Minnesota, Crookston at 7 p.m. on Friday and Bemidji State University at 3 p.m. on Saturday while the football Dragons launch NSIC play at reigning NSIC champion Bemidji State at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
MSU Moorhead men and women will enter the St. Olaf Invitational cross-country meet on Saturday morning at Northfield while the Dragon women’s golf team will compete in the Concordia Invitational on Sunday and Monday at Lake Elmo.
MSUM MEMOS. . . . JESSICA TRAUTWEIN, a former basketball and track letterwinner at MSU Moorhead and an Academic All-American, received another major award on Wednesday. The Fargo, ND native was named one of eight female regional winners of the NCAA Division II Conference Commissioners Association Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award. . . . . Minnesota State Moorhead men climbed to ninth place on the latest NCAA Division II regional cross-country poll. . . . . The Dragons have unveiled a new athletic website designed by TOM CHALLEY. . . . . JEFF TESCH, head coach at Bemidji State and the NSIC Football Coach of the Year in 2006, led the nation in receiving as a senior tight end at Moorhead State in 1977. . . . . BRETT BEESON, the NCAA Division II Player of the Year and a national scoring champ at MSUM in 1995-96, will continue his professional basketball career overseas again this winter. Beeson will play for Archena, Spain. Last season at Sabadell, Beeson led the league in scoring with 19.2 ppg. . . . . Women’s swimming and diving practice at MSUM begins officially on Monday, September 17. . . . . NSIC volleyball comrades Concordia University (3rd) and Southwest Minnesota State (7th) are ranked in the top 10 on the latest CSTV/AVCA Division II national poll. MSUM hosts Southwest State September 21 and Concordia October 6. . . . . BECKY ANDERSON, a four-year volleyball letterwinner at MSU Moorhead, is the new head coach at Minnesota prep stronghold Alexandria High School. . . . . Former Dragon runningback CORTEZ EVANS is a member of the football staff at Macalester College. . . . . MITCH McLEOD, a former starting wide receiver at MSUM and head baseball coach at North Dakota State, has been named Director of Athletics at Detroit Lakes High School, replacing another ex-Dragon, RICK MANKE. . . . . Former Dragon quarterback PAUL CLARK has joined the football staff at Roseau High School. . . . . Junior safety JOSH JONES, a first team DAKTRONICS All-American as a sophomore, shares the NSIC Pre-Season Defensive Player of the Year award with Zach Stafford of Bemidji State. Jones ranked second nationally with 10 interceptions in 11 games as a sophomore. Jones has been tabbed a first team pre-season All-American by Football Gazette and second team by D2football.com. . . . . Dragon football games are broadcast over ESPN Radio 1660 AM. Steve d’Eustachio returns for his 10th season as play-by-play announcer while Mike Larson will provide commentary. JASON WAGNER, a former starting linebacker at University of North Dakota and a onetime Dragon assistant coach, has been named a member of the football coaching staff at UND. . . . .
