It’s time to roll out the red carpet at Minnesota State University Moorhead. An ambitious week unfolds at MSUM on Wednesday when University of Minnesota, Crookston visits Alex Nemzek Field for opening day in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The Dragons and Eagles meet at 4 p.m., the first of three matches in five days. MSU Moorhead meets Bemidji State University at 12 noon on Saturday and University of North Dakota at 1 on Sunday. MSUM blanked University of Sioux Falls 5-0 on Sunday to lift its overall record to 1-2. KATIE HIEMSTRA scored a pair of goals for the Dragons while ANDREA PEARSON posted her first shutout.

MSU Moorhead makes its NSIC volleyball debut this weekend in home matches with Winona State University at 7 p.m. on Friday and University of Upper Iowa at 4 p.m. on Saturday in a weekend homestand in Alex Nemzek Hall. MSU Moorhead fell at North Dakota 31-29, 25-30, 30-25, 30-26 on Thursday and posted a 2-1 record at the UND Invitational last weekend. MSUM defeated Chadron State, 30-16, 30-14, 30-28 and Northern Michigan 30-22, 30-24, 30-26 but fell to Dickinson State 29-31, 30-19, 30-26, 30-32, 15-13. MEGAN NORLING had 16 kills in Thursday’s loss to UND, while Norling (16) and LAURA TVRDIK (15) combined for 31 kills against Chadron State. Tvrdik had a club high 12 kills in the sweep of NMU and Norling 18 kills against DSU.

The Dragon women’s golf launches its 2007 fall campaign at the Concordia College Invitational on Saturday and Sunday at Wildflower golf course near Detroit Lakes.

In search of a little football redemption, MSU Moorhead hosts Mayville State University at 2 p.m. on Saturday in the final pre-conference tune-up. MSUM opens NSIC play at defending champion Bemidji State University September 15.

MSUM MEMOS. . . . Once again, Minnesota State Moorhead is prepared to make a substantial impact in the long run. Indeed, the cross-country Dragons of MSUM debuted in style last weekend at the NDSU Invitational at Rose Creek golf course in Fargo, ND. MSUM men claimed a share of first place with South Dakota State with 43 points while host NDSU finished third. Leading the Dragons was junior SCOTT EGEBERG who placed second overall with a time of 20:36.56 over the four-mile course. Junior KYLE ECKHOFF placed sixth overall in 21:10.81. MSU Moorhead women finished third overall with a score of 59 points behind NDSU (37) and SDSU (51). Freshman ANNA VanWECHEL placed third with a time of 18:54.39 over the 5,000 meter course while sophomore KARI BLOCH was eighth at 19:24.75. . . . . Minnesota State Moorhead will celebrate Family Day on Saturday. . . . . The Dragons have unveiled a new athletic website designed by TOM CHALLEY. . . . . BECKY ANDERSON, a four-year volleyball letterwinner at MSU Moorhead, is the new head coach at Minnesota prep stronghold Alexandria High School. . . . . Former Dragon runningback CORTEZ EVANS is a member of the football staff at Macalester College. . . . . MITCH McLEOD, a former starting wide receiver at MSUM and head baseball coach at North Dakota State, has been named Director of Athletics at Detroit Lakes High School, replacing another ex-Dragon, RICK MANKE. . . . . Former Dragon quarterback PAUL CLARK has joined the football staff at Roseau High School. . . . . Junior safety JOSH JONES, a first team DAKTRONICS All-American as a sophomore, shares the NSIC Pre-Season Defensive Player of the Year award with Zach Stafford of Bemidji State. Jones ranked second nationally with 10 interceptions in 11 games as a sophomore. Jones has been tabbed a first team pre-season All-American by Football Gazette and second team by D2football.com. . . . . Dragon football games are broadcast over ESPN Radio 1660 AM. Steve d’Eustachio returns for his 10th season as play-by-play announcer while Mike Larson will provide commentary. JASON WAGNER, a former starting linebacker at University of North Dakota and a onetime Dragon assistant coach, has been named a member of the football coaching staff at UND. . . . .
