It’s everybody into the pool for Minnesota State University Moorhead women when the Dragons enter the 2008 North Central Conference Swimming and Diving Championships February 21-24 at the UNO Health, Physical Education and Recreation Building at the University of Nebraska Omaha in Omaha, NE. Ranked sixth on the latest NCAA II Women’s Swimming and Diving poll, coach TODD PETERS’ latest edition is poised to make a major splash at the NCC showdown and hopes to qualify additional athletes for the approaching NCAA Division II Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships as well.

MSUM MEMOS. . . . . Dragon senior men and women basketball players will be saluted in a ceremony between games on Saturday night. Women’s coach KARLA NELSON will recognize current Dragons JESSICA FESENMAIER, SHELLY SOULE and ALLISON SWENSON, and JESSICA TRAUTWEIN, a 2007 graduate. MSUM men’s coach STU ENGEN will honor KYLE NELSON, BLAKE STROUTH and CRAIG WILLIAMS. MSUM men and women host Wayne State and Southwest Minnesota State in a pair of matching Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheaders beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday. The NSIC Tournament begins on Saturday, March 1. . . . . Concordia University ranks third, Wayne State eighth and Winona State 10th on the latest NCAA II women’s regional poll while Winona State is first, Northern State second and Southwest Minnesota State ninth on the men’s poll. . . . . A pair of high school basketball games are scheduled for Saturday at Alex Nemzek Hall. The Moorhead High School girls will meet DGF at 12 noon, and the Thief River Falls boys will play the DGF Rebels at 2:30. . . . . Minnesota State Moorhead women will face Upper Iowa on Friday, February 22, at 6 p.m. and University of St. Thomas on Sunday, February 24, at 9 a.m. at the Baseline Tennis Club in Minneapolis. Junior ALYSSA SCHAFER was unbeaten in a pair of singles matches last week and was honored as the latest NSIC Women’s Tennis Player of the Week. . . . . It’s a granddaughter for Dragon Hall of Famer GERRY TURNBERG. Daughter Nicholle and son-in-law Mark Parrish of the Minnesota Wild are the proud parents of Gianna. . . . . Minnesota State Moorhead fell a notch to 15th on the latest NCAA Division II wrestling rankings. Four Dragons are ranked individually, including KELLY JANKE, seventh at 133, and TYLER TUBBS, eighth at 174. MSUM is ranked second in the NSIC and tied for fifth on the nine-team North Central Regional poll. Janke, 133, is ranked first in the region. MSUM will enter the NCAA Division II Regional March 2 at Mankato. . . . . MSU Moorhead sophomore wide receiver JABARI TAYLOR has been named a second team All-American for 2007 by FOOTBALL GAZETTE. Taylor set Dragon single season records for pass receptions, 90, yards gained, 1,147, and touchdown receptions, 13, last fall. . . . . Minnesota State Moorhead will enter the Cobber Open indoor track meet on Saturday. MSU Moorhead produced one first place finish and four seconds at the Bison Classic February 16 at North Dakota State University in Fargo, ND. ASHLEY ROEMER captured the women’s high jump, 5-7, and the Dragons received runnerup finishes from SARA JULSRUD in the 800, 2:20.37, ANNA VanWECHEL in the mile, 5:15.53, the 4 X 400 relay crew of Julsrud, ALISON STREYLE, KIRBY BLACK and KRISTA ANDERSON, 4:00.34, and SCOTT EGEBERG in the men’s 3000, 8:53.52. . . . . MSU Moorhead opens the 2008 softball season March 2 at the Rebel Games in Orlando, FL. . . . . MSUM has unveiled a new athletic website designed by TOM CHALLEY. . . . . The next Dragon Fire luncheon is scheduled for Wednesday, February 27, at Courtyard by Marriott in Moorhead. . . . . Dragon basketball games are broadcast over ESPN Radio 1660 AM.
