Learning Outcomes Assessment Committee Minutes November 28, 2005 11:00 a.m. Present: Tim Borchers, chair; Ted Gracyk, Cassie Kramer, Stacy Voeller, Alison Wallace. Borchers distributed three articles; Developing an Assessment Plan to Learn about Student Learning, More than a Thermometer Using Assessment Effectively, and Selecting from the Assessment Tool Chest, for review by members. He noted that these could be also be included in packets to department assessment coordinators. Minutes: Moved by Gracyk, seconded by Wallace approved the November 21, 2005 minutes as amended. The motion passed unanimously. The Plan for Assessing Student Learning: Borchers stated that the SLOAC policies, page 4 of The Plan for Assessing Student Learning, will be submitted for review by Academic Affairs Council (AAC) tomorrow and plans to have it on the December 6, 2005, Academic Policy Advisory Committee (APAC) agenda. The committee continued its review of The Plan for Assessing Student Learning. The document should be ready, along with additional materials, for distribution to departments at the beginning of Spring Semester 2006. The following revisions were suggested: 1. Add information regarding non-degree programs in first bullet in second list on page 2. 2. Minor word changes were suggested and add reference to additional documentation on page 3. 3. Add “or Director” on page 6. Borchers agreed to check on open meeting law. 4. Add core values and abridged mission on page 7. 5. Add sentence on using action verbs to second bullet under #1, add sentence on generic learning outcomes such as ability to write will be assessed by the Liberal Studies Committee, replace “sophisticated” with “focused” and add to reflect “taking it to the next level” in the fourth bullet under #1 on page 9. 6. Move majority of second bullet under #2 to first bullet, add that assessment should be done annually, and add a line about multiple measures to page 9. 7. Add rubrics to the table where appropriate and add bias disadvantages to surveys and interviews, add the word “stretch” to the second sentence in the second bullet under #3, and delete C-range score on page 10. 8. Clarify learning outcome, alphabetize and add additional words to the glossary on page 11. 9. Add pages on embedded assessments and rubrics. Borchers will make revisions and send a revised draft to members. Since some members are unable to meet next week it was suggested that a two-hour meeting be scheduled during finals week. Members are to send available times to Borchers. The meeting adjourned at 11:50 a.m. |
