Learning Outcomes Assessment Committee Minutes November 14, 2005 11:00 a.m. Present: Tim Borchers, chair; Ted Gracyk, Jody Mattern, Amy Phillips, Peggy Rittenhouse, Stacy Voeller, Alison Wallace. The meeting was called to order at 11:00 a.m. and introductions were made. Overview: Borchers announced that two students will be joining the committee following Student Senate appointment. The Student Learning Outcomes Assessment Committee (SLOAC) replaces the Institutional Assessment and Effectiveness Committee (IAEC) and will be responsible for assessment of student learning outcomes for undergraduate and graduate majors. SLOAC will not be responsible for institutional effectiveness. Reporting Schedule: Departments/programs will continue to submit Assessment Plans and Reports in conjunction with Biennal Reports and 6-Year Reviews. The Assessment Reporting Schedule, included in the meeting materials, was reviewed and discussed.
SLOAC Goal: The goal is to have a current or revised plan and/or current report for each major submitted and reviewed by the SLOAC prior to the NCA Reaccrediation Visit in March 2007. Borchers has been meeting with department chairpersons and assessment coordinators in the Colleges of Arts and Humanities and Social and Natural Sciences to review their status and discuss assessment. Assessment coordinators for the Colleges of Business and Industry and Education and Human Services were asked to do the same with their respective departments/programs. Plan for Assessing Student Learning: The Plan for Assessing Student Learning, a revised version of the original Plan for Measuring Institutional Effectiveness and Assessing Student Learning, was reviewed. Borchers agreed to make discussed changes and send electronically a second revision to members. Committee members were to review pages 13-16 for discussion at the next meeting. Additionally, he will check if student permission is needed to review work in a department meeting, even if it is only for evaluation purposes. Instructional Improvement Grants: Departments may apply for up to $7,500 for an Instructional Improvement Grant. A small number of departments have applied for funding in the past. The aim is to increase the number of departments vying for the grants. Next meeting: Members were to notify Borchers of their availability for November 19-20, 2005. The meeting adjourned 11:55 a.m. |
