Student Learning Outcomes Assessment Committee Minutes

April 17, 2006

Present: Tim Borchers, chair; Ted Gracyk, Cassie Kramer, Jody Mattern,
Peggy Rittenhouse, Stacy Voeller, Alison Wallace

The meeting was called to order at 1:05 p.m.

Minutes: Moved by Gracyk, seconded by Rittenhouse to approve the April 10, 2006 minutes. The motion was approved unanimously.

Social Work Report:

  • Suggest organizing the match between the Student Learning Outcomes and the questions on the various surveys.

  • Suggest using assessment that directly measures student learning in terms of the actual course content versus surveys about student performance.

  • Suggest dating reports – have two and don’t know which one is the most recent.

  • Use of faculty evaluations is not relevant to assessment of student learning.

Social Work Plan:

  • Suggest using embedded assessment (using a defined rubric geared to a specific assignment) in SW 470.

  • The value of the SECI and SSAS is not evident.

Social Work Student Learning Outcomes:

  • Discrepancy in the list of Student Learning Outcomes between the plan and the report.

Nursing Undergraduate Student Learning Outcomes:

  • Outcomes 4-6: Suggest using “able to” or something similar. Do students actually do each of the things listed in these outcomes while they are students?

  • Do all students get an “international perspective”?

  • In outcome 6, it might be useful to separate out the designs, manages, and coordinates parts.

  • In the philosophy section, what is a metaparadigm?

Nursing Graduate Student Learning Outcomes:

  • The opening line struck us as being somewhere between “able to” and “will.”

  • Unsure how #3 will be measured. Also, does improvement modify the other parts of that outcome?

  • It seemed that analyzing legal issues was asking quite a bit. Suggest using “applying legal principles” or something similar would be a better choice of wording.

  • Unclear what “one’s own position” in #4 means.

Gracyk and Wallace volunteered to review Elementary and Early Childhood Education and report at the next meeting. Legal Studies and International Studies will probably not be ready for review until fall. Still expecting reports from: Mass Communications, Physics, Psychology and School Psychology, Chemistry, Computer Science and Information Systems, Anthropology and Earth Sciences (have seen a draft), Curriculum and Instruction, Languages and Cultures, Technology, and Reading this spring. Priority will be for reports accompanied by an Instructional Improvement Grant request.

Discussion ensued on ways to improve the forms, including clarify the need for direct measures, numbering SLOs, dating the reports/plans, noting if report is based on existing plan or new plan submitted with the report, and to note modifications to plans. It was suggested to gather feedback from departments on whether the forms are user friendly.
