Physical Education (Teaching)
Assessment Report
2003
Learning outcomes have been established and are assessed at two different
times:
-
In
PE 474, Tests and Measurements in Physical Education, students take a test
to assess their knowledge related to the specified learner outcomes in
Physical Education.
-
Upon
completion of Student Teaching, the supervising teacher completes as
assessment to determine the students’ preparation and teaching
effectiveness.
Results:
There has been several faculty who have retired in the Health and Physical
Education Department in the last several years. Previous faculty (now retired) developed a written exam, which included
questions from each of the major physical education courses as an assessment
tool to determine comprehensive learning (skills and knowledge) in physical
education curricula. This written
assessment was based on Minnesota Board of Teaching Standards. Unfortunately, the previous assessment tool was very outdated
and reflected courses taught in the past and it was not based on current
curricular offerings. This old
assessment would not be an appropriate measure of a student's comprehensive
skills and knowledge for the current program.
Revision
of the Plan
The Physical Education Assessment Plan was revised to reflect current
curricula. Each faculty member
teaching a core physical education course was asked to submit ten questions for
each class they taught in the major. One hundred questions were selected from the submitted
questions and a new written exam was developed.
The revised examination was given to 49 current physical
education majors who included freshman, sophomores, juniors and seniors. In the sample of 49 students, there was two freshman, 13 sophomores, 20
juniors and 14 seniors that completed the written exam. The range of scores was from 39 to 71 percent correct responses.
The mean scores out of a possible 100 were as follows: freshman 43.5,
sophomores 50, juniors 55 and seniors 58.36.
Standard deviations ranged from 3.54 to 9.68. The standard deviations were as follows: freshman 3.54,
sophomores 8.43, juniors 9.68 and seniors 8.85. The test score data would suggest as students’ progress from freshman
to seniors in the physical education program, increasing knowledge is acquired.
The goal of our department is to give this assessment every year and
track the progress of our students during their time as a Physical Education
Major at MSUM.
