Candidates in the Master of Science in Curriculum and Instruction study educational foundations, curriculum theory, instructional practices and educational research with an emphasis on critical reflection. The four program areas (i.e., A-D) are divided into the programmatic themes as noted below. Objectives and assessment measures are then identified for the programmatic themes.

A) Program Area: Foundations of Education

Programmatic Themes: Purposes of School and Relationship of Society to Schools

Objectives:
1) Demonstrated knowledge of the history and development of social structures in America and the relationship between social structures and schooling.

2) Demonstrated knowledge of historical, psychological, philosophical, multicultural, economic and social contexts of schooling.

Measure 6- Student Portfolio Evaluation

B) Program Area: Curriculum and Instruction

Programmatic Themes: Learning for Inquiry and Teacher as Decision Maker

Objectives:
1) Demonstrated knowledge of curriculum design, implementation and modification

2) Demonstrated knowledge of social and technological developments affecting curriculum

C) Program Area: Teaching and Learning

Programmatic Theme: Improving Teaching and Learning

Objectives:
1) Demonstrated knowledge of curriculum options and instructional strategies

2) Demonstrated knowledge of current issues trends in education

D) Program Area: Critical Reflection

Programmatic Theme: Critical Reflection of Practice

Objectives:
1) Identification of relevant problems in classrooms and schools

2) Demonstrated ability to critically reflect on existing school policy and practice

3) Demonstrate the necessary knowledge, skills, and dispositions to design and conduct an action research project

4) Demonstrated ability to thoughtfully write the action research paper and clearly articulate the paper’s findings
