Physical Education (Fitness and Sport Science)
Assessment Report, 1999

Assessment Results:
The following instruments will be used to assess student outcomes and evaluate the program:

1. Health and Physical Education Department, Student Internship Evaluation form

This form is completed by the agency or organization supervisor after the student serves their internship and provides insight regarding the student's basic performance on the job as well as valuable feedback to students as to how prospective employers view their work habits and abilities. Please refer to the Assessment Plan to see an example of this form.

Results:

Internship supervisors evaluated twelve students in the areas of personal qualities, mental qualities, professional qualities and performance. The following results list the number of students who scored in each evaluation category for the different qualities.

Summary:
Student performance, during internship experiences, was very encouraging as the results indicate all of the measurement evaluations were in the above average or superior categories. Fitness and Sport Science majors performed well in the areas of appearance, dependability, initiative and ambition, understanding of exercise and fitness topics, understanding of training principles, professional attitude toward colleagues, attitude toward clients, reaction to suggestions and providing for individual differences among clients.

2. Fitness and Sport Science Form, Assessment Test

This test is completed during their senior year and assesses the competencies developed by the
American College of Sports Medicine for a Health and Fitness Instructor. Please refer to the
Assessment Plan to see this instrument.

Results:
There were fourteen students who completed the eighty-question assessment test. The following results list the number of students who scored in each percentage categories.

                            95-100%=O
                            90-94% = 1
                            85-89% = 1
                            80-84% = 3
                            75-79% = 2
                            70-74% = 3
                            65-69% = 2
                            60-64% = 2

Summary:
Overall, it appears that students are meeting the ACSM objectives for a health and fitness instructor. Students were successful in understanding basic competencies in the areas of health, fitness and exercise science. Of the fourteen students who completed the Fitness and Sport Science assessment test, seventy-one percent received a score of seventy percent or better.
