Mission Statement
The Health and Physical Education Department's primary mission is to provide high quality undergraduate professional preparation programs in the fields listed below. Each program serves to enable our graduates to meet the challenges of the future by enhancing developing knowledge and skills in: higher order thinking; global understanding; multicultural perspectives; scientific and quantitative literacy; readiness for work and career; and responsible citizenship. Click on the name of the program to go to its individual assessment plan.

Mission
The mission of the Physical Education Teaching Program is to prepare students to be competent beginning teachers of physical education in grades K-12.

Student Goals:

  1. To prepare physical education majors with the skills and knowledge to be competent, beginning teachers in grades K-12.

  2. To be a good role model for others and embody an active, healthy life-style consistent with the current understanding of research regarding risk factors for disease and infirmity.

Student Outcomes:

A.  Demonstrate knowledge and skill regarding the following so that they can plan, implement, and evaluate physical education programs: (Items: 21-25)

1. Fundamental motor skills:  Knowledge and skills in the description and execution of fundamental locomotor and non locomotor skills.

2. Sports and Games: Knowledge and skills of traditional individual, dual, and team sports and games.

3. Lifelong Leisure Activities: Knowledge of contemporary, noncompetitive activities suitable for participation throughout life.

4. Dance and Rhythms: Knowledge and skills of basic rhythmic activities as well as selected dance forms.

5. Exercise and Health-related Fitness: Knowledge and skills of fitness as an activity or series of activities.

B. Demonstrate knowledge about human movement from the following perspectives so that they can plan, implement, and evaluate physical education programs: (Items: 27-34,35,38-40,42-47, 49-65,67-69,75-77, 80-83)

1. Physiological: Knowledge of human physiology and the physiological effects of exercise.

2. Anatomical: Knowledge of human anatomy and human movement from an anatomical perspective.

3. Mechanical: Knowledge of human movement from a mechanical perspective.

4. Motor Behavior: Knowledge of human movement from a motor development and motor learning perspective.

5. Development: Knowledge of typical and atypical social, cognitive, and affective development of. children and adolescents.

6. Historical: Knowledge of physical education and sport from a historical perspective.

7. Sociological: Knowledge of the sociological aspects of physical activity relevant to physical education in the schools.

8. Psychological: Knowledge of the psychological aspects of physical activities relevant to physical education in schools.

9. Philosophical: Knowledge of various philosophies of physical education, including philosophies of well known physical educators, and their implications and consequences for the individual and society.

C. Demonstrate knowledge regarding the following so that they can plan, implement, and evaluate physical education programs: (Items: 84-88, 98-99, 101)

1. Role of Physical Education in Schools and Society: Knowledge of the goals and value of physical education on individuals and society.

2. Knowledge of one's Own philosophy of teaching physical education and its implications for curriculum and instruction in physical education.

3. Knowledge and understanding of the social and psychological dynamics experienced by the physical education teacher which affect the quality of the teaching experience.

4. Knowledge and understanding of considerations in adapting physical education experiences to meet the needs of students with special needs.

5. Knowledge and understanding of the considerations in designing physical education activities to accomplish desired outcomes.

D. Demonstrate skill and knowledge .....?? the following aspects of physical education pedagogy:

(items: 36-37,70-74, 78-79, 89-97, 100, 102)

1. Knowledge and skills required for planning and preparing for goal oriented instruction.

2. Knowledge and skills in managing the physical education classroom environment to maximize the achievement of educational objectives.

3. Knowledge and skill in analyzing fundamental and sports skill performance, provide meaningful feedback to the learner, and modify the learning experience to bring about corrective motor performance.

4. Knowledge and ability to formatively and summatively assess the fitness, skill, cognitive and active learning of physical education stunts.

5. Knowledge and skill in evaluating the one's teaching perfomiazice and to make adjustments to access subsequent matter.

Assessment Plan:

1. Assessment of Learning

This test, administered during PE 474, assesses the students' understanding of the information needed in each of the four outcome categories.

2. Physical Education Student Teacher Evaluation

This form is completed by the cooperating teaching following the ten week student tracking experience and provides insight regarding the student's basic on the job performance as well as feedback to the student as to how perspective employers view their abilities.
