Mission Statement
The Health and Physical Education Department's primary
mission is to provide high quality undergraduate professional preparation programs
in the fields listed below. Each program serves to enable our graduates to meet the
challenges of the future by enhancing developing knowledge and skills in: higher order
thinking; global understanding; multicultural perspectives; scientific and quantitative
literacy; readiness for work and career; and responsible citizenship. Click on the

Mission
The mission of the Fitness and Sport Science Program is to provide students with basic
competencies and exposure to experiences that will allow them to succeed as an entry level
Health and Fitness instructor. Professional Health and Fitness Instructors are employed in
wide varieties of settings, including but not limited to, fitness centers, sports medicine
departments, YMCAs and cardiac rehabilitation departments.
Student Goals
- Develop the technical competence to perform, at a satisfactory
level, all of the basic competencies necessary for the entry level Health and Fitness Instructor.
- Be a good role model for others and embody a healthy life-style
consistent with the current understanding of research regarding behavioral risk factors for disease
and infirmity and engage in those practices that promote wellness.
Student Outcomes
The American College in Sports Medicine has outlined areas of
expertise and specific competencies within each of these areas. This framework serves as a
basis for the national, voluntary certification examination for Health and Fitness
Instructor (the ACSM exam). Upon completion of the course of study required for Health and

Evaluation Form
This form is completed by the agency or organization
supervisor after the student completes the internship and provides insight
regarding the student's basic performance on the job as well as valuable feedback
to students as to how prospective employers view their work habits and abilities.
- Fitness and Sport Science Form, Assessment Test
This test is completed during the students' senior year and
assesses the competencies developed by the American College of Sports Medicine for a
Health and Fitness Instructor.
