Assessment for Student Teachers
The mission of Moorhead State University Elementary &
Early Childhood Education Department is to prepare competent beginning elementary and
early childhood teachers, well grounded in the liberal arts, who possess pedagogical
knowledge, attitudes and skills.
Goals for student learning:
- To prepare teacher
education students with the knowledge and skills to be competent
beginning teachers.
- To prepare teacher education
students to acquire the attitudes and dispositions to continue to develop their talents as teachers.
- To prepare teacher
education students to build collegial relationships and to make
contributions to the profession.
Student Learning Outcomes:
The following performance outcomes are identified as fundamental to the teacher education
program at Moorhead State University: MSU teacher candidates:
1. apply liberal studies content
knowledge.
2. understand student/child development and learning.
3. demonstrate multicultural, gender-fair and disability sensitive
values.
4. employ appropriate group and individual instructional strategies.
5. establish and maintain a productive learning environment.
6. effectively use communication and interpersonal skills.
7. design an organized, effective and appropriate curriculum.
8. use appropriate group and individual assessment strategies.
9. engage in lifelong learning
10. demonstrate professionalism, ethical behavior, and leadership.
11. use technology in support of classroom instruction.
Assessment plan:
I. Rating sheets will be completed by faculty
supervising students in field placements at different points: junior level, senior level,
and student teaching.
Elementary Assessment Points:
- At the end of intermediate
practicum (EECE
367J-a new rating sheet is being developed)
- At the end of the 3 week
practicum. (EECE
467F-a new rating sheet is being developed)
- At the end of Detroit Lakes
practicum (a rating sheet is being developed)
- Student Teaching (rating
sheet attached) (data will be compiled
from forms completed at the beginning of a student's experience and at the end of
his or her experience.)
Early Childhood Assessment points:
1. At the end of infant practicum (EECE432-a
new rating sheet is being developed)
2. At the end of preschool practicum (EECE
432-a new rating sheet is being developed)
3. Student Teaching (rating sheet attached) (data will be compiled
from forms completed at the beginning of a student's experience and at the end of his
or her experience.)
II. Pre and Post assessment written communication skills
Pre: Essays are written for admission
into elementary and early childhood programs. The following criteria are applied

grammar
punctuation
spelling
A rating sheet is
being developed to be used with this assessment.
Post: Essays will
be written by elementary majors in ED 410 and in the capstone course, EECE 488, by early childhood majors. The same rating sheet will be used by faculty
to assess the students writing.
III. Student Self Assessment of learning outcomes:
Exit questionnaires are given to students
toward the end of the student teaching seminars.
