Introduction

The primary purpose of the economics major is to provide students in the program with basic academic skills, with analytical skills, with a solid understanding of economic concepts, and preparation for various careers and responsible citizenship.

Student Outcomes

Students should be able to:

  1. Exhibit knowledge of basic economics.

  2. Communicate effectively in writing and speech.

  3. Possess basic quantitative skills.

  4. Apply analytical skills within the field of economics using theoretical, communication and quantitative tools acquired at the university.

Assessment Activities

Capstone course

The Economics Department will be adding a senior research seminar to the curriculum. Preliminary discussions in the department favor a capstone course requiring an empirical research paper using tools of economic analysis. A written and oral presentation will be required.

Evaluation [PDF] of student's skills and abilities, based on the senior research seminar, will include the following six general areas.

  1. Basic knowledge of economics

  2. Writing

  3. Quantitative skills

  4. Analytical skills

  5. Speaking (research presentation)

  6. Overall evaluation (How well did the student integrate all areas?)

Several faculty members are working on the course description and course outline for the senior research seminar. A standard evaluation form, designed by the department, will be used for evaluating student learning.
