COMS Assessment Plan

  1. Performance Goals and Assessment

The Computer Science and Information Systems Department has developed the following performance goals (with subgoals) to use as a basis of our assessment plan for Computer Science majors (COMS).

  1. Goal: Demonstrate appropriate writing skills needed to communicate in a highly technical area.
    • Demonstrate the logical organization of technical ideas in a document
    • Demonstrate good presentation of technical ideas in a document

    Assessment: Senior Seminar paper

  2. Goal: Demonstrate appropriate oral skills needed to communicate in a highly technical area.
    • Demonstrate the logical organization of an oral presentation
    • Demonstrate good delivery of an oral presentation
    • Demonstrate appropriate use of visual aids in an oral presentation

    Assessment: Senior Seminar oral presentation

  3. Goal: Demonstrate understanding in all phases of the Software Development Life Cycle.
    • Analysis
    • Design
    • Coding
    • Testing
    • Maintenance
    • Ongoing documentation for all the above phases

    Assessment: CSIS 340 selected test questions and projects

  4. Goal: Demonstrate an understanding of algorithm analysis, design and implementation techniques.

    Assessment: CSIS 352 selected computer programming assignment.
  5. Goal: Demonstrate an understanding of operating systems as a resource manager.

    Assessment: CSIS 430 selected test questions.
  6. Goal: Demonstrate an understanding of the phases in the compilation process.

    Assessment: CSIS 435 selected test questions and project.
  7. Goal: Demonstrate an understanding of computer architecture.

    Assessment: CSIS 320 final test selected test questions.
  8. Goal: Understand and communicate the layered network architecture model and related protocols.

    Assessment: a question on the CSIS 349 final.
  1. Measuring the Assessment
  1. The instructor of the course for each performance goal will fill out a rating sheet.  Each student will be rated as either poor, fair, good, or excellent in each performance goal.  
  2.  The ratings of each performance goal will be averaged. 
  3. The department goal is for the average of each goal to be 90% fair to excellent, and 40% good to excellent.
