faculty and administrators, and records of committees and departments.
Records of student organizations, including clubs and societies, are also
preserved, as are publications about Concordia and its history. The
personal papers and publications of many past and present faculty members are
also preserved at the Archives. Some
of these contain valuable information on the history of the region.
The papers of former history professor Hiram Drache, for example, contain
much valuable information on the history of agriculture in the region, including
the early bonanza farms of the Red River Valley.
Similarly, the World War II Correspondence Collection contains letters
written by Concordia students while they were serving in the armed forces in the
1940s. Some
faculty papers, together with other records of the college, are not open to the
general public. Other materials
require special permission to research. Contact
the Archives for specific information concerning access to records and papers.
Genealogical
Materials and Norwegian History
Sources at Carl Ylvisaker Library: Services
Offered by the Center:
The Concordia College Library has a particularly strong collection in
Norwegian history and culture. This
includes a number of materials that would be of use to genealogy researchers.
The Library has a number of family histories that trace families back to
Norway. It also has copies of farm
histories (bygdeboker) in Norway. The
reference department maintains a listing of the family histories and bygdeboker
that are in the Library collections. Numerous
books on Norway, its history, literature, traditions, and culture, are in the
Library’s circulating collection. Many
of these are in the Norwegian language. The
Library’s catalog describing these publications may be used through the
Library website: www.cord.edu/dept/library/ In
addition, the Library has microfilm of the early United States census records of
Minnesota and Dakota Territory. Selected
microfilm records from the census in parts of southern Wisconsin and in parts of
Iowa are also preserved in the microfilm collections. For
