HISTORICAL SKETCH
Established in 1975 to actively promote the interests of wheat growers in Minnesota, the Minnesota Association of Wheat Growers is headquartered in East Grand Forks, Minnesota.  It shares its facilities with a companion organization, the Minnesota Wheat Research and Promotion Council. Both organizations devote their efforts to a variety of activities including sponsoring research on wheat cultivation, promoting legislation for wheat prices and supports, marketing of Minnesota wheat in the nation and abroad, and acting as a clearing house of information for wheat farmers in the region.  Members of the two organizations have given testimony before state and federal committees on agricultural questions, have traveled overseas to promote the sale of wheat, and have contributed to publications about the industry.

Membership in the Wheat Growers, the principal organization, is open to any person “who produces at least 1000 bushels of wheat for sale or use in Minnesota.”  By 1977, over 1000 Minnesota farmers were members of the Wheat Growers, and membership has continued to grow, making it the major agency for wheat interests in the state.

COLLECTION DESCRIPTION
The collection has maintained a separation of the records of the two organizations, the Minnesota Wheat Growers (Boxes 4-16) and the Minnesota Wheat Research and Promotion Council (Boxes 1-3).  The records for each organization are arranged alphabetically by subject, and include articles of incorporation, by-laws, correspondence, minutes, trade documents, news releases and clippings, legislative and congressional committee hearings and testimony, workshop materials, reports, convention records, and special subject files. A small amount of materials of local councils associated with the Minnesota Wheat Growers is also included in the collection as a separate file.  Most of the records in the collection are in excellent condition.
