HISTORICAL SKETCH

The American Association of University Women has the dual purpose of furthering the education and advancement of women, and of uniting educated women to work for the betterment of their communities.  The AAUW supports the oldest and largest non-university fellowship fund for women as well as the largest awards program in the country exclusively in support of women.  AAUW also helps to advance women’s causes through effective input on legislation dealing with women’s issues and through promoting international understanding and common goals among women through the International Federation of University Women.  The Moorhead Branch was organized February 5, 1930, the 17th branch in the Minnesota Division, with 29 charter members.  Since that date the Moorhead Branch has continued as an active organization.  Local support of the Fellowship Program has been a regular and steadily growing aspect of the organizational activities. 

 

COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

The American Association of University Women collection consists of material beginning in 1927.  The material from 1927-1930 is from several charter members who belonged to a Fargo-Moorhead chapter before the beginning of the Moorhead chapter.  This material includes information on the AAUW’s fellowship program, yearly study topics, yearly branch reports, the organization’s constitutional history, yearbooks, art show programs, correspondence, newsletters, and several histories of the branch.  Scrapbooks and ledgers of minutes are also included.
